Steroids left in his system certainly helped him vs Ruiz. I believe he wanted an extra advantage vs Ruiz because he thought Ruiz would try to maul him. Instead, Ruiz fought fair and more from the outside and paid for it. Vs Rahman who Ruiz clearly beat, with no steroids, Toney looked lethargic and unintimidating.

i dont know if it's because of steroids but all my friends that played high school football used to be the same size as me, but now they're all getting fat. they also got thick facial hair all the way down their necks way earlier than me. you think they matured faster than me and have slowed metabolisms or what?

he proved what i said all along to be true, he was taking them for endurance and recovery, not muscle mass. you saw for yourselves what a difference it can make.

Yep. A lot of people said exactly that after the Ruiz fight, myself included. And everyone was like "You idiots! Does James Toney look like a bodybuilder to you??!!"

I think, in retrospect, Toney was counting on his physique to be his Get Out of Jail Free Card...and also hoping that they were out of his system already (remember the fight was bumped up- so he had to alter his cycle, I'm sure). And he was also counting on the fact that most people do not understand steroids, and the ungodly boost that extra testosterone has on endurance, energy, stamina and recovery.
