So let me get this straight, HBO had no problem making a profit, even though 1 of the undercards cost them 3 million. Do you think the undercards would be as pricey?

Using your "rumored" math, 3 fights at 1.2 million equals 3.6 million, as it stands based on numbers reported Mayweathers 3 PPV's with Showtime is just under 4million. So showtime is actually profiting then, correct? And we're not even including the live gate, the price of which continues to rise.

Like I said the fighters guarantees rise, the undercards lower, the PPV price rises, the live gate price rises, Closed circuit, concessions, sponsers etc....rises. Mayweather vs. Cotto would have to tank miserably in order for showtime not to make a profit, anywhere near 1 million should do ok. There is also no promoter to pay, that alone could cover some of the additional guarantee to the fighters.

Not my first choice of fight, but certainly do able for showtime.
There are rumors going around that the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert Guerrero on Saturday at the MGM Grand actually lost Showtime money. Dan Rafael of ESPN...

I don't have a source either, but I've also heard the same figure about Showtime's profit margin with PPV buys. I believe the number was over 1 million, something Guerrero, Maidana 1&2 were not able to do, making them net losses. BUT, with the HUGE success with Mayweather-Canelo, I think they are in the long run profitable.

So take that into consideration with Cotto. The cost of that would be astronomical as Floyd would have his $32mil guarantee, realistically higher for this type of fight, and you have Cotto who would probably take no less than $10mil. The first fight did about 1.5 million, and I think a lot of people estimate that this one will do even less, especially in the aftermath of a failed Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

It's a longshot to see how this fight would generate a lot of money, if any at all. If Showtime is losing money on fighters that are getting only $1.5mil, I don't see it being feasible that they can make money on a guy getting ~$10mil.

Details of the six-fight, 30-month contract that Floyd Mayweather Jr. signed with Showtime in February still have not been made public, and no specific figure for Mayweather's pay-per-view bout with Robert Guerrero was ever released. Shortly after that May 4 … Continue reading →

Here's a link with a simple break down of showtimes numbers after the guerrero fight. You can see why some people would be misinformed and in turn be misinforming the public. Showtime experienced a percentage of growth but it was not large because of the PPV event, but they clearly state that due to the PPV other areas have grown. So no they are not loosing money, they just are not making major profits. But signing Mayweather was never about that now was it? They experienced growth after signing Mayweather, and a fight with a popular fighter like Cotto would continue that growth.

Funny thing about the link you posted, firstly Bleacher Report only employs a handful of writers and editors, the majority of the articles are submitted by regular people after going through a simple process of submitting 1 original article, that article gets critiqued and if its good they allow you to write for them, I know this because I used to write for them.

Dan Rafael is a well known Mayweather basher/Arum delivery boy. So take what he says with a grain of salt, his source was probably Arum.

Did Arum just call Maidana a cab driver? Anyone who believes the things that Arum says has to be really really naive. He's just blowiing smoke and he knows it.
