Comments Thread For: WBO Orders Lee-Saunders Middleweight Title Fight

The saga surrounding the World Boxing Organization (WBO) middleweight title was met with yet another plot twist Friday morning. Unbeaten contender Billy Joe Saunders—previously rumored to have been willing to once again step aside—has instead enforced his mandatory status for a due title shot versus recently crowned Andy Lee.

A purse bid hearing has been ordered by the sanctioning body, to be held on Tuesday
January 27th at the sanctioning body's headquarters in Puerto Rico.

“I’m within touching distance of fighting for the WBO world title now and I can’t wait,” said Saunders (21-0, 11KOs), who earned the title shot with a narrow points win over Chris Eubank Jr. in their grudge match which doubled as a final eliminator last November.

Warren/Saunders were fine with Lee/Nielsen in Ireland in March, but Lee/Quillin in NY in April must've been too much a threat to the proposed stadium fight. Now by pushing the purse bid, Warren/Saunders will lose money because it's still too early in the year to have a stadium fight.

Further more, Rafael mentioned Andy may drop the WBO belt for the big money. Wouldn't doubt if he & Booth are on the phone with DiBella saying they want more cash to drop the belt and go on Haymon's show.

If Lee does drop, could get Saunders/Lemieux for the vacant title, which is a win win for the fans. Lee knocks out Quillin on prime time NBC and Golovkin gets a new MW to fight for a title.

It definitely is a win-win for us. We could get a Lemiuex/GGG unification bout to end 2015.

Lemiuex has been stopped by Rubio and he's lost to Alcine. A win over Rosado (Rosado's 5th straight loss) is meaningless.

I want unification match-ups. Lee and Lemieux present a similar amount of danger to GGG, maybe Lee presents more because he's longer and can box. Lemieux plays more into 3G's style so maybe he'll get stopped quicker. Whether it's Lee or Lemieux, I just want all the belts to get unified. GGG is the closest to doing so, so i'm rooting for whatever path gets him to the WBO and WBC belts. The sooner he finishes with 160, the quicker he can set his sights on 168. If Quillin beats Lee for the belt, there's little chance that 3G/Quillin gets made and we won't get an undisputed champion.

Sorry, WBO has Lemieux ranked high.

Guys are allowed to lose. Lemieux was a 22 year old kid when he fought Rubio. He got careless and dived in for an attack that Rubio timed him for, and then Lemieux was hurt, panicked, and punched himself out. As for Alcine, they rushed him back too soon for that fight and it was obvious when watching with how he was reacting to Alcine's punches and how he broke down emotionally after the fight.

Great fighters (still to be determined for Lemieux) are allowed to go through tough experiences like that.
