Comments Thread For: Linares-Gamboa bout Targeted For U.S. Soil, Says Diaz

Make no doubt about it, there is serious discussion regarding a fight between newly crowned WBC lightweight belt-holder Jorge Linares (38-3, 25KOs) and Yuriorkis Gamboa (24-1, 17KOs) for the spring.

"It's a fight we're interested in, we're talking and I don't know where Cancun came about (as the destination) how do you get a Venezuelan and a Cuban in Mexico?" said the Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker, Robert Diaz, with a chuckle. "But it is a fight that interests us. Mr. Honda from Teiken Boxing, who is our co-promoter with Linares, likes it and Jorge likes it, too. TV, can make it happen."

Targeted soil? How about Miami? Huge Cuban and Venezuelan community.

If I'm not mistaken both have fought in Mexico before and both in Cancun.

It's a pretty good boxing city where people will show up for sure. You have the fight in Florida and you run the risk of many people not showing up. I still remember how Andre Berto couldn't fit 900 in his hometown in Florida.

Berto was the selling point? Haitians are a huge community in Miami however Cubans are a much larger audience.

Gamboa in Cancun is nice. But why not risk promoting the **** out of him in Miami... what's there to lose?

The problem is Miami is a city where most sports fans don't show up. If they did then I'm sure not just Gamboa, but Rigondeaux, Erislandy Lara, and others would be fighting out of Miami.

That's a fantastic fight, these guys can really put their punches together. I'll be rooting for my boy, Gamboa.

Online cliché' invented around the time LeBrony came to Miami.

Lara, Gamboa and Rigondeaux shouldn't have to pay the price.

Its true,as a Cuban american living in Miami,I have to say that Florida is kinda weird when it comes to boxing. You ask around in the community, and almost everyone knows Lara, gamboa and rigo, but for some reason, they wouldnt show up to their fights.
