Comments Thread For: Fernando Vargas: Mayweather Too Smart For Pacquiao

Former champion Fernando Vargas, who is now a trainer with his own stable of fighters, believes Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be too intelligent for Manny Pacquiao.

Talks are ongoing for the two welterweight champions to face each other on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao has power in his hands and a lot of speed. Mayweather is also fast and considered to be the best defensive fighter in boxing. At the very least Pacquiao has a puncher's chance, but Vargas predicts that he'll never be able to land that necessary big punch.

Pac will DESTROY Floyd. Floyd create this illusion that he have impeccable defense. Bull****. He is showing it vs SLOW and FLATFOOTED fighters.

Let examine the last 5 fights.

Pacquiao's last 5 fights (Algieri, Bradley 2, Rios, Marquez, Bradley 1 ), Pacquiao was hit with a total of 598 times.

Mayweather's last 5 fights (Maidana 2, Maidana 1, Álvarez, Guerrero, Cotto), Floyd was hit with a total of 678 times

In the last 5 fights of Floyd, is there anyone there that is faster than Pacquiao? Is there anyone there that has slickier movement than Pacquiao?

Manny will hunt Floyd w/o a bit of respect for his power... Manny will walk over Floyd for 12 rounds. Floyd have troubles w/ an aggressive fighter and mostly w/ a SOUTHPAW. Pac will be coming from different angles with explosive footwork confusing feints, and head movement, and u better believe Freddie Roach and him will come in with several gameplans, not just feint to body, feint feint, over hand. I don't see Floyd having a chance to win against Manny.. not a bit... only by ROBBERY!

the same way manny walked over marquez for 12 rounds?

I like pacquiao as a fighter but there is no way, that him or any other welterweight is gonna walk over Floyd for 12 rounds.

does pacquiao have a chance too win? yes
will he walk over Floyd for 12 rounds? hell no

Floyd's pedigree will win him 4 rounds alone.

      mayweather will win 117-111

More like he's too smart to ever fight him. It's crazy that he's going after Cotto now even though he's been getting pressured from everyone to make the Pac fight. It's sad man. If you watched the UFC last night, Mcgregor showed the world how the **** you turn **** up and let people know who you want next. None of that bull**** about "if it makes good business sense, we can fight" or "It's up to my manager to decide who I fight" Blah, blah, blah. My sport has become soft as ****. smh

Floyd vs. Manny was a 50/50 fight in 2010, maybe in 2012, but definitely not now! It's amazing that you can compare the talent level of the last 5 Floyd opponents, with the last 5 Manny opponents! This article is the most objective assessment of the current situation in boxing...which is that Floyd is held to a much higher standard than Manny Pacquiao (it's obvious that Pacquiao/Arum have won the PR war!):

              December 16, 2014:

Floyd Mayweather has been excoriated for fighting hand-picked opponents and being too risk averse in the last five years, especially in this space. And Mayweather has been dominant in most of those bouts where you/me/we belabored him for fighting opponents who would make him look sensational. Yet, Manny Pacquiao can fight Chris Algieri, who I questioned before the fight as being PPV worthy, something the terrible buy numbers supported, and he gets major props for winning every round against him?

At first I thought Pacquiao beating Algieri didn't fool anybody, but I think I was wrong. You'd think that the lousy PPV numbers would suggest that the public knew it wasn't much of a fight. And that winning a decision, when he really needed a knockout, and didn't get it over a novice wouldn't restore the public's sense that Pacquiao is now a killer again. But apparently it has?

I tried to explain before the bout how Pacquiao-Algieri was specifically made to create the illusion that Manny is back now and is as good as and smarter than ever. And you know what? Based on what's scoured in the sports section of many newspapers and on the Internet, they were more successful than I thought they'd be. Because it seems Manny went from being the prohibitive underdog when matched up with Mayweather after being knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez two years ago, to now being almost even money based on him taking Chris Algieri to boxing school last month.

Based on the consensus, Pacquiao gets some breaks that Mayweather would never get in the eyes of the boxing public. And since 2009 I've maintained and have been consistent that Mayweather-Pacquiao hasn't happened because of Mayweather's reluctance more so than Pacquiao's. Ever since the talk of them fighting each other became a hot topic, it's been mostly because of Floyd why it didn't happen. And I still stand by that.

But what's fair is fair… I wonder how well Mayweather would've been received if he signed to fight Algieri and beat him as handily as Pacquiao did?

For starters, Floyd would've been excoriated by both boxing fans and the media for fighting a no hope opponent like Chris Algieri. Leading up to the fight we would've read about how Algieri barely beat Ruslan Provodnikov and the fight is just another hoax by Mayweather to pocket $30 million and avoid fighting Pacquiao.

Let us suppose that it was Mayweather who peppered Algieri for 36 uninterrupted minutes on November 23rd instead of Pacquiao, which of course isn't much of reach. What would the post-fight chatter be? I can only speculate, but I'd be willing to bet that the loudest voices wouldn't be declaring that Floyd is back and is as sharp as ever. Nor would the talk be centered on how quick and accurate he is and how impossible it is to lay a glove on, and you know I'm right. I think it would be more on the lines of, "Mayweather fought Algieri because he knew he couldn't lose and how it says nothing as to how great he still is because he handled a beginner like Algieri." And then every name fighter campaigning between 140-147 who was more deserving and dangerous than Algieri would be named and suggested as that's who Floyd should've fought instead. And if that were the case, they'd be correct.

So why does Pacquiao get a pass?

For more than a decade critics and fans have ripped Mayweather up and down, and rightfully so, for being too judicious and fighting no hope opponents who resembled Algieri. Or to put it another way, for fighting and defending his titles against opponents who didn't have tool-one to beat him with. The opponents he fought were either too old or too green (like Algieri), or they just didn't have the skill or power (like Algieri) to concern Mayweather in the least.

I can't envision a case being made on Mayweather's behalf suggesting or reinforcing that he could beat Pacquiao based on how Floyd performed against Algieri had they fought. All that would be repeated over and over to rebuke that is, Algieri is inexperienced and Mayweather only did what he should've done against a limited opponent at the most elite level in professional boxing. And that's all that Pacquiao did! And actually, Manny underperformed because he didn't get the stoppage or come close to the first round kayo that his trainer Freddie Roach predicted he would score.

The overreaction to Pacquiao's showing against Algieri is ridiculous.

I beg to differ.. Floyd's has always tend to pick flatfooted, no head movement (prime for that lighting quick right), slow.. opponents.. Guerrero (too slow), maidana (way too slow) only chance was his awkwardness, and still gave him a hell of a fight (1st).. canelo (slow and green).. cotto (best footwork fighter, too bad not much head movement, gave foney a good fight, cause he could corner him), Marquez is a counter puncher that was forced to be on the offensive vs a bigger, younger WAY faster Mayweather, recipe for disaster, I mean I don't understand how Mayweather couldn't STOP him! Vicious Victoria has ZERO head movement, I mean Maidana is slow as heck and he was tagging him with straight rights all night.. at will.. Mayweather saw him as a HOT sell after the Berto fight and the public ate it.. Hatton, DLH, Moseley.. all too slow, and pac made them look even worse.. Judah, hand speed, just no brains..and still cant believe floydie didn't get disqualified when uncle roger came into the ring!

on the other hand.. Pac has faced just as equal bad/slow opposition.. yet he's made them look worse... algerie is all footwork, that's why he got tagged and 2 levels below Pac.. Rios is somewhat a Maidana, brawler face first and pac outboxed him, beat him bad... only reason why I think Rios made it 12 is because the Nap Marquez put paquiao was still fresh so he took a page from Mayweather and was too cautious.. Bradley.. bad awful gameplan.. yet pac beat him to the punch and landed plenty of clean shots.. and Bradley is got some hell of a head movement.. We have marquez.. (my boy).. Paquiao was well on his way to taking him out.. but got careless and marquez being the GREATEST counter puncher I've seen.. made him pay.. dearly!

with all that said... If it was fair judges and ref.. I can really see pac pulling off a slight SD.. on activity alone.. cause he'd be punching at everything and rolling out when Mayweather decided to pot shot..

This again. You already post it in one of the threads here in nsb.

Haymon-Arum cold war was the reason why Pac-Algieri was happening right now.
