Because Cotto comes to a table with a proven fanbase willing to pay to watch him fight on PPV. Not as simple as adding Cotto's last PPV number to Mayweather's last PPV number, but Mayweather-Cotto 2 is a massive fight.

You put the full marketing push behind the fight, and you could reasonably expect 1.2m PPV buys as the floor, with a higher amount depending on how competitive you can market the fight to be. Basically splitting at least $45m between the two fighters ($35m-Floyd, $10m-Cotto), with them sharing in whatever further upside.

HBO isn't fighting Showtime. Between the two networks, Showtime is the A-side because they have rights to the A-side fighter

Cotto mayweather doesn't meet any of the criteria of a successful rematch.

          It wasn't controversial
          It wasn't a great fight
          It wasn't an upset

It will flop, at least when u consider Floyd will get $32mil and Cotto will want $20mil and there will be a huge backlash if the Manny fight doesn't happen yet again.

It will do Maidana type numbers but will cost a lot more meaning a huge loss for Showtime.

Mayweather, according to the rumors, was calling for two-thirds of the money; Pacquiao, until recently, only talked of being willing to split 55/45.

Not saying that you would find a definitive solution, but you clarify the relevant range for the purse split if you know what both guys are bringing in. If Floyd and Pacquiao were doing the same level of business, the purse split should be more even; if Floyd does double the business that Pacquiao does, the split should have some reflection of that, too.

Mayweather-Pacquiao does 3 million PPV buys, Pacquiao-Vargas does closer to 300k. Does Pacquiao really deserve a big cut? I doubt it.

                Mayweather-Maidana I did ~800K PPV buys.

                Mayweather-Cotto did 1.5M PPV buys.
