They said the same thing about Lara...that Canelo would never fight him. What does Canelo have to do, or rather, who must he fight to prove that he's willing to take on formidable opposition? He fought Floyd, and yes - got schooled - fought Lara and won, albeit in an ugly way, beat the piss out of Angulo, and put Trout on his ass fresh off of Trout's schooling of Cotto, all back-to-back. Canelo is game.
