Former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7KOs) is a big fan of the British boxing scene. Malignaggi is very well known among the British boxing public. He fought twice in big fights on UK soil, against Lovemore N'dou and Ricky Hatton. And when Amir Khan made his American debut in New York City, he faced Malignaggi. Last year, Kell Brook of Sheffield captured the IBF welterweight championship and Malignaggi has expressed his interest in testing him.

Even the journeymen in U.S. come to win in most cases I'd argue. They are not complete no hopers as they are in Europe. There is a reason the whole world flocks to U.S. for sparring and training. They know there is no messing about.


An argument can be made for Economics, where in W.Europe you have generous social programs, in U.S. if boxing doesn't work out you may end up on streets if you don't have plan B, so best make it work, hence the determination.

The discrepancy isn't in talent as W. European guys have solid fundamentals, discipline and conditioning, which can take you far (Sturm vs Oscar, Zbik vs Chavez). Some of it has to do with will of taking on the best becasue normally their countries get behind them, so they don't have to risk their cash cow (belt) against top guys, so when they do step up they get beat because of a lack of exposure to top competition and the jump is too big (Zavcek vs Berto).

The rest can be attributed to the reluctance to travel from non-European boxers to some extent.
