I think fighters use to win titles at their weight and then DEFEND those titles then against their #1 contenders. If Ward were to win back the titles he unjustifiably got taken from him** he could then defend them against the like of the hard hitting James DeGale or the dangerous George Groves. Both have looked very promising in recent outings.
Remember it was a peach of a right hand that put Groves away in the 2nd Froch fight, Ward doesn't have that much power. Then you've the promising 6'3 Callum Smith coming up, the dangerous Andre Dirrell who is a legit contender whose only loss is a SD to Froch in Nottingham. Of course you've Golovkin who he could face at 168 in fall 2015/2016. So at 168 Ward could fight:
James DeGale
George Groves
Andre Dirrell
Gennady Golovkin
Callum Smith (circa 12-18 months from now)
Anthony Dirrell
Plus IMO Carl Froch in Wembley in front of 80,000.
But people are demanding he should move up to 175 straight away and face Kovalev, the only possible huge fight for him at 175. Stevenson is aligned with Showtime and a Ward-Stevenson showdown thus isn't very realistic, period.
(**Ward was stripped of his WBC title initially when he had torn his shoulder and was nursing that injury.)
