Why was it so important for Rigo and Donaire to meet

Imagine if they would've never fought. Remember all the arguments and discussions that took place here everyday. We would still see that today.
IMO Donaire would be the unified champ @122 right now and top 5 P4P on almost everybody's list. Maybe even 3rd.

That's why it's of the up most importance that we as fans DEMAND the best fight the best. If this was the case today, who knows what the boxing landscape would look like. A lot of current champs would not be. Peter Quillen, Danny Garcia, etc...

You can be a fan of a boxer or you can be a fan of boxing. But if you claim to be a fan of boxing. You have to demand the best fights. You shouldn't be worried about other things that don't concern you.

That's why rankings matter too. People tend to dismiss them and look for fun fights instead. But top guys facing top guys in their division is the way it needs to be.

The best fought the best. What a crazy concept.

If they never fought, Donaire still would've been champion.

And Donaire NEVER gets enough respect for always fighting who the fans want him to fight. He only gets hate. Walters and Rigo are great examples.

Good point, he jumps in there with 1 threat after another.

No tune ups, even Darchinyan was a good fight on paper.

Because if they didn't fight it would further tarnish the integrity of the sport, like the Floyd and Manny situation.

His career would've been great. Praise from all over the industry as being one of the top in the sport.
But instead what we got was the truth. He was not exposed or a bum, like some people say. He was beaten by a better fighter and all the arguments got settled in the ring and came to a screeching halt.

But I ask myself what would his boxing status be if they never met. Boxing fans would be stuck wondering what if and all the Donaire groupies would have a free pass to talk about how great he is.

You can see Donaire's heart is not into it like before. He would had lost to somebody along the way or the Walters would had done the same job on him.

Donaire contemplated retirement even before fighting Rigo.
