And weight do matter, that's why we have 17 divisions.
You realize Louis was able to hurt the big heavyweights too, right? He was able to KO the likes of Primo Carnera and Max Baer, both would be considered 'real' heavyweights in this day, and not LHWs/CWs.

You can say that Louis wouldn't have ever faced anybody like Vitali before, but also recognize that Vitali wouldn't have ever faced anybody with the explosiveness or combination punching that Louis posessed. Louis' offensive arsenal was on another level to these HWs today.

He just didn't waste his energy moving a lot. Defensively, yeah he was nothing special.

I disagree with the notion that skills have improved.. No way. And what you are saying is not backed up with "FACTS". Tell me, if skills have improved so much, why don't we see anybody as brilliant as Muhammad Ali @ HW, or SRR/SRL at welter, or Jose Napoles at welter, or Pernell Whitaker at lightweight, or Roy Jones Jr at middleweight, or Wilfredo Gomez at super bantam, or Willie Pep at featherweight?

I don't see any heavyweights/cruiserweights today that throw better combinations than Joe Louis, or any heavies with better accuracy or punching technique. The **** Louis would pull off at HW was amazing stuff, and you don't even realize it.
Man this is the first time I'm seeing one of your posts but you know your thing! Green K. Everything is golden, plus funny you have Verdejo gif in your sign because he's very promissing puncher and great with his combination as Louis was. BTW I discovered him not too long ago when our coach spoke about him. Concerning Louis, I never saw no better offensive fighters at heavyweight than himself and Tyson and I never will.

Joe Louis is soo stiff and easy to hit. Imagine if he tried fighting Mike Tyson with that stiff style, Walcott was landing at will. Louis wouldn't last a round. Boxers are not only better sizewise today, but also technically. No hate, but come on, you just can't watch the Louis-Walcott fight without seeing some very basic (and serious) flaws in Louis' fighting style. Too damn stiff.
          facts looks bad

He was the best for his time. He was a legend. I respect him a lot and this should in no way be seen as any kind of hate against him.

But people put this guy in their top 10 lists of best boxers ever... It's absurd. He had a very weak resume and I really can't imagine him even going half the distance against guys like Ali, Tyson, Foreman, Klitschko, Lewis, Holyfield, etc. etc. etc. etc..... It's just not realistic and he gave us no reason to believe otherwise.

I got nothing but love for Louis, he was the best in his time, but boxing has evolved. When Deontay Wilder beats Stiverne, even he will have a better resume than Louis and that's being realistic (except if Wilder loses, of course).

Give Louis the props he deserves, but don't go into some kind of nostalgic worship. He has proven nothing to make him enter the top lists of best boxers ever. You're harming his legacy by disappointing people when they research his resume with too high expectations.

Besides, look how stiff he is. If Walcott had such an easy time hitting him over and over again, he wouldn't last 1 round against Mike Tyson.

Joe was before my time. I never watched him so I can’t comment. I wonder if you watched him in HIS TIME. Its really hard to compare different times. We all have opinions and that’s fine. Let people think what they want. Its not hurting anybody.

                    • All these old timers are just domestic legends, back when the sport only really had Americans boxing in the US. You would have a German or Italian around, but it was mostly Americans that ran boxing. All the greats were Americans.

                      So of course they’re overrated.

Like when US women’s soccer was killing everyone in the 90’s. Took a while for countries to catch up.

Boxing is very international now, with killers from Mexico, Ukraine, Japan and the UK. Internationally it started taking off in the 70’s somewhat. So everything before is just domestic level shiiiit as far as I’m concerned.
