  • My theory on punching power, right or wrong?

Ok take Gerry Cooney he has dynamite in his left hand utterly devastating power, his right hand however is very very weak, theres nothing really on it, and yet he is still using his hips to power both punches. Now theres nothing wrong with his right hip, Gerry just hasn't learnt how to punch hard with his right hand/right hip, if he had he would have devastating power in both hands.

Now take John Ruiz, he doesn't have any serious KO power in either hand, yet he is still punching with the hips, all pros are, but my theory is that there is degree of mastery over using the hips that some boxers have, and many do not have it. So anyway Ruiz has no power because he is using both sides of his hip like Gerry Cooney is using his right hip, ie poorly. Im not saying he would become a devastating puncher if he had mastery of his hips I am saying that he would punch a lot harder than he does now if he had mastered his hips.

Infact its very common for a boxer to have a weak right hand and a strong left hand think Tua, think Cooney, etc and that's because in order to get serious power on the weaker left hand you cant muscle it you need good technique to generate the power in a smaller amount of distance, also theres less chance you will muscle it, unlike with the right hand, which gives you more distance and more time to mess it up by instinctively muscling it. Tua and Cooney could have had power on both sides like Joe Louis theres nothing weaker about their right hips, but they never mastered the movement on that side. Equally I think Ruiz hasn't mastered hip rotation on either side.

    Agree or disagree and why?

Some fighters just do not establish the right distance and or get the right leverage at the correct timing on certain punches...some just master timing and distance on certain punches and that becomes their money punch

In other cases the fighters fight with their power hand in the front and that is why they have powerful hooks and jabs

No thats not the reason why because these guys hit hard/ light on a heavy bag where distance judging and timing isn't a factor. Cooney still sucks with his right hand on the heavy bag and is amazing with his left same with Tua.

Tua and Cooney are both right handed. Their naturally stronger side is in the rear and they hit harder with their naturally weaker side, because they have better technique on that side.

Even on a heavy bag you have to get your distance down..not to close and not to far..when you throw your back hand the distance can be deceiving at times..so angles and distance counts for a lot...

Without stating it out right you just explained why Joe Louis is the best technical and most proficient heavy of all time.

Punching power comes from the floor up to the hand. Who has heavy hands or the best technique or fastest hands has a lot to do with power.
Many times the position a fighter gets himself to in regards to distance often adds power.

Lots of variables to consider, accuracy is a big part of it too!
