weak? darnell boone may not be world class but he certainly isnt weak. he is very durable and extremely dangerous in his own right. the only difference between what boone did to stevenson in their first fight and what he did t kovalev in theirs is the ref allowed kovalev to continue when he beat the count on wobbly legs. resulting in kovalev going on to win a split decision while stevenson was stopped. on top of that stevenson finished boone in much more devastating and conclusive fashion in their respective rematches,
finally lets keep in mind the different paths they took to get where they are currently at. kovalev came into the pro ranks on the heels of a long and successful amateur career competing for the russian national team at the highest level for many years.
stevenson got out of jail and started fighting for a buck, later realizing his talent and acting on it. he had a brief amateur career and then turned pro, leaving much of his learning to take place in the paid ranks. the first boone wa s alearning experience, a lesson kovalev had already learned years ago as an amateur when he got knocked out.
once under the tutelage of the great emanuel steward stevenson became a good fighter fast but before that he was merely a diamond in the rough. first couple of times i watched stevenson i was thoroughly unimpressed, he isnt that guy any more though. if you think the TKO loss to darnell boone means something going forward that means one of three things.
either you havent watched stevenson early and is simply talking out of your ass, you dont know boxing and cant recognize the leaps he has made in ability or you are so biased towards kovalev you will twist anything to say he would knock stevenson out.
i too favor kovalev if they fight, slightly. but not because of a fight a different man took part in several years ago. but i guess its like with the people who are still picking agaisnt floyd every fight based on the first castillo fight wellover 10 years ago. if the hate is strong enough..
