another ability of hagler was that he could box from both stances. he could adapt to the fight and control the pace of the fight by switching syles and confusing opponents. thats just one of his many great qualities

His nearly unmatched dedication to his chosen profession, would be my answer to that question.

The amount of time he spent in the gym in preparing himself to fight is legendary (ALWAYS in absolute peak condition), and when you see the versatility Hagler possesed during his best years (late 70's/early 80's), it was obvious he spent much time perfecting his craft. The guy wasn't always the seek-and-destroy brawler that we saw in the latter stages of his career, as evidence by his earlier performances against the likes of Briscoe, Sibson, Hamsho, etc...At his best he could box equally well off the back foot and behind the southpaw jab (possibly his most effective punch), in addition to the aggressive part of his game on the inside that we saw him employ after his footwork had slowed during the last couple/few years. He could switch it up if needed, going from southpaw to orthodox and giving his opponent a different look. And he also proved plenty capable of fighting a defensive style with the aspects of slipping, parrying, countering, etc.

The guy was very nearly the complete package as a Middleweight and to me, it all came from his tremendous dedication to succeeding in the sport.

          LOL yeah.

He switched from southpaw to orthodox just to load up on a right cross, then back to southpaw to load up on left crosses.

A couple of guys hit on the answer. What made Hagler "marvelous" was his relentless determination. I have never seen anybody else epitomize this so completely.
