Comments Thread For: Cotto-Canelo: TV Deals, Sponsors Still Up in The Air

Negotiations continue for a highly anticipated battle between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Their respective promoters are targeting an HBO Pay-Per-View date of May 2nd.

While the American television outlet is decided, since both boxers fight on HBO - there is still no clear decision as to the agreed upon television outlet in Mexico and what agreements will be worked out in terms of their major sponsors.

If both fighters really want the fight those little details can be worked out. I am sure Corona and Tecate recognize the value of being part of this big fight on cinco de drinko weekend, even if they have to share exposure with the other.
As far as the TV deal in Mexico, they have done joint ventures before and this one can be no different. If that is all that is left that means the major points of contention, like the money split and weight and who comes out first etc..., have been finalized and that's a big hurdle. I expect an official announcement shortly after the holidays...

Cotto said a deal is no where close.

Weight, Venue, who's the A-Side haven't even been decided yet.

Well, Cotto needs to understand he is not a clear A side in this one. This isn't Floyd/Manny
Canelo did better PPV numbers fighting Lara than Cotto did fighting the Middleweight champion of the world and a guy that had headlined a PPV before.
The Cotto/Floyd fight did 1.6 million (with Canelo/Mosley on the undercard) while Canelo/Floyd did significantly more than that.
Cotto is a great fighter and deserves respect but he is not going to impose his terms on this guy, he doesn't have that kind of leverage. Cotto walked away from the fight once to take an easier fight against a 40 year old coming off two knee surgeries. If he doesn't want it now so be it.

Cotto is the A-side. He has beaten better fighters, and already been at this stage many times. If everything is equal Cotto is still the lineal middle weight champ. He is already giving Canelo the date he wants so what is the problem?
