Comments Thread For: Joe Calzaghe Will Help Nathan Cleverly Bounce Back

Hall of Famer Joe Calzaghe has promised to help his close friend, Nathan Cleverly (28-2, 14KOs), get his career back in order. After getting knocked out last year by Sergey Kovalev, Cleverly made a decision to move up by 25-pounds to the cruiserweight division.

Cleverly won two fights in a row and then he was beaten by way of split decision in a November WBO eliminator with rival Tony Bellew, who avenged his earlier loss to the Welsh boxer. Afterwards, Cleverly admitted he was too small for the weight and required a return to 175 if he planned to continue his career.

Given Cleverly's university education, he certainly has more desirable alternative career options than most other fighters, and my quick assessment of the current and near future light-heavyweight ranks leads me to urge Nathan to seriously consider retirement regardless of whatever future goals he has set in his pugilistic career.

Cleverly has a ****ing degree in mathematics and is obviously bright.

But he's made the most moronic career choices.

Fought like a fool against Kovalev and got embarrased in front of his people.

Sounds like taking advice from a cokehead is a great idea.

I was happy he got knocked out by Kovalev. Cleverly looked like a right arrogant **** in that fight, and paid the price.

I've met Clev & he's a lovely guy. A Lonsdale belt out-right & the EBU/Commonwealth titles are well within his grasp!

When Ceverly was with Joe Calzaghe's dad, Enzo, he was using a hit and move style that worked well for him because of his height, reach, and speed. When his own father took over he tried to turn Cleverly into a pressure fighter who came forward looking for the KO in every fight.

He made 2 big mistakes with Kovalev. The first was volunteering to fight him, the second was going toe to toe. Cleverly has a great chin and when I saw what Kovalev did to him I knew that Krusher had freakish power and would rule the light-heavyweight division.

Cleverly is still a young man and if he can keep making the weight he might possibly become a world champ again at 175 - if Kovalev and Beterbiev move up to cruiserweight.

Nice one Joe , if anyone can get the kid going again there can't be many better than you.Still think Nath can do ok at light heavy and maybe win a version but needs to stay away from Kovalev at all costs.

Cleverly didn't even train for bellew and it was probably his biggest fight
