As for Mexican Americans celebrating the holiday-that's fine. But they are Americans living in the US, Canelo is not. I'm sure the MGM will do well when Canelo fights.

I wish you and others would just stop the charade and be honest about why you want Canelo/cotto to be on this day and not another Floyd fight. then we could have a real debate and move the issue forward.
i will prefer floyd-pac over canelo-cotto on that date if i had to choose, but not floyd-khan...and thats aside from nationalism, thats not an exclusive date for anybody, if floyd wants to go against canelo in that date he has every right, but a the same time i dont see anything wrong from canelo trying to fight on that date , floyd him self dare him to do it...

If you want those dates, put up a great fight that the fans want to see.
And Boxing fans want to see Canelo vs Cotto on May 2nd because it's a great matchup with no predetermined winner backed by a great rivalry, and it forces Mayweather to fight Pacquiao, another fight that could go either way with a great rivalry.

Who's going to watch Mayweather vs Khan?, we all know who wins that one, so why waste anyone's time. The only fight that can even compete in any level on May 2nd is Mayweather vs Pacquiao, we all know it.

And guess what???? IF May vs Pac happens, Canelo vs Cotto moves to a later date you idiots.

It's a win win situation for us fans, we get Canelo Cotto, or Mayweather vs Pacquiao.

I dont get why people are against this.

      "bububububbut Mayweather is teh Boss"

You got it all wrong, "You are Mayweather's boss", but seems like people are too chicken***** to see it.
For me It is not about "JUST WANT ONE FIGHTER PPV TO DO WELL AND FORGET ABOUT THE REST". It would SUCK for BOXING FANS to have to CHOOSE a PPV over the other or having to trying and switch back and for to see what is going on in each fight. It really shouldn't come down to that at all but this is purely a EGO THING on ALL SIDES and stuff like this is AWFUL FOR THE SPORT!

They all will lose Money if the decide to do 2 PPVS on the same damn night. Mayweather only has 2 Fights left, Canelo can't wait 1 More Year? He is not even a big draw yet to try and make the Biggest Draw in boxing MOVE HIS DATE. HIS BOSS had no problem with it for years now because he was Promoting those Mayweather fights and featuring GBP fighters on those Cards. But now it is a Problem?

I will buy the crap Canelo is selling if he fights IN Mexico, against a Mexican opponent and gets paid in Mexican pesos. Every fighter on the undercard needs to also be Mexican. Then and only then would I believe how passionate he is about this.

Who gets that date should not be based on nationality but on numbers and revenue generated. With this rhetoric about banning non Mexican boxers from Cinco De Mayo, are non Mexicans also banned from Mexican restaurants during this weekend? I love Mexican food, will they deny me at the door if I want to eat there.

Holidays are for everybody. I never heard Puerto Ricans banning people from their parade.

The most interesting thing is that if you look up the holiday, youll pretty much read everywhere that its kind of celebrated in Mexico some what, mostly celebrated in Puebla, and is most fervently celebrated in America as a marketing ploy to sell alcohol.
SOME RELEVANCE? At least here in Texas I see most whites, some blacks and some mexicans drunk and celebrating in fact I see more whites cooking, BBQing, drinking celebrating than even mexicans themselves do. I don't know how it is in other states but here in Texas for sure Americans are # one 5 de Mayo fans hands down.

I don't know much about the observance of Cinco de Mayo in Mexico, but in the United States it is basically just another St. Paddy's Day with margaritas and mojitos instead of green beer. All there is to the American observance of it in my experience is drinking and big boxing fights. People are on here trying to treat it like it is Easter or some high holy day.

ok that's fine. I understand you want the best fight on that date. But the business people involved more than likely want the most lucrative fighter/fights. Thats why ODH had it, then Floyd, then manny when Floyd was "retired" then Floyd when he returned.

ODH wants Canelo to have the date even though he isn't the biggest earner and is playing the "nationalism" card. He is entitled but that doesn't mean he is going to get what he wants.

You must have miss understood the conversation. We were not discussing the amount of Americans or Texans that celebrate May 5th, my response was the historical context of May 5th and why the battle of Puebla had somewhat an affect on America.

Also the majority of Americans that celebrate May 5th dont even know what they're celebrating, as a matter of fact I would hesitate to call it celebrate. Americans dont drink and BBQ because they are commemorating the events of May 5th 1862, They do it because it has been marketed as a day to do such things. Americans drink and party on May 5th because they have been told to do so.

No they do not "celebrate" May 5th, they market it, there is a distinction.
