Cinco de Mayo performers at the White House
According to a paper published by the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture about the origin of the observance of Cinco de Mayo in the United States, the modern American focus on that day first started in California in the 1860s in response to the resistance to French rule in Mexico. "Far up in the gold country town of Columbia (now Columbia State Park) Mexican miners were so overjoyed at the news that they spontaneously fired off rifles shots and fireworks, sang patriotic songs and made impromptu speeches."[34] A 2007 UCLA Newsroom article notes that "The holiday, which has been celebrated in California continuously since 1863, is virtually ignored in Mexico."[34] TIME magazine reports that "Cinco de Mayo started to come into vogue in 1940s America during the rise of the Chicano movement."[25] The holiday crossed over from California into the rest of the United States in the 1950s and 1960s but didn't gain popularity until the 1980s when marketers, especially beer companies, capitalized on the celebratory nature of the day and began to promote it.[35][36] It grew in popularity and evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, first in areas with large Mexican-American populations, like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.[37]

In a 1998 study in the Journal of American Culture it was reported that there were more than 120 official U.S. celebrations of Cinco de Mayo, and they could be found in 21 different states. An update in 2006 found that the number of official Cinco de Mayo events was 150 or more, according to José Alamillo, professor of ethnic studies at Washington State University in Pullman, who has studied the cultural impact of Cinco de Mayo north of the border.[38]

In the United States Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico.[12][39][40][41] On June 7, 2005, the U.S. Congress issued a Concurrent Resolution calling on the President of the United States to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe Cinco de Mayo with appropriate ceremonies and activities.[9] To celebrate, many display Cinco de Mayo banners while school districts hold special events to educate pupils about its historical significance. Special events and celebrations highlight Mexican culture, especially in its music and regional dancing. Examples include baile folklórico and mariachi demonstrations held annually at the Plaza del Pueblo de Los Angeles, near Olvera Street. Commercial interests in the United States have capitalized on the celebration, advertising Mexican products and services, with an emphasis on beverages,[42][43] foods, and music.[44][45]

On 9 May 1862, President Juárez declared that the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla would be a national holiday regarded as "Battle of Puebla Day" or "Battle of Cinco de Mayo".[46][47][48][49][50]

Although Mexican citizens feel very proud of the meaning of the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, today it is not observed as a national holiday in Mexico.[51] However, all public schools are closed nation-wide in Mexico on May 5.[52][53] The day is an official holiday in the State of Puebla, where the Battle took place, and also a full holiday (no work) in the neighboring State of Veracruz.[54][55]

UK fans Travel across the Pond to Support, the Atmosphere at Mayweather vs Hatton weigh in still give me CHILLS, that was a lot of UK fans who made that Trip to Support their Fighter.

Also look at the Turnout for Froch vs Groves II?

Respect to PR fans also well, the Turnovers for Cotto during PR Day Weekend is always amazing so NO DOUBT that fan base is Top 5!
I think how well fans travel and how important boxing is to a country is two different things. UK fans travel better for sure, and Puerto Ricans would too but the island is not exactly busting at the seams with money. Like I said the sport of Boxing is ingrained in Puerto Rico, we are talking about a culture where many women are as knowledgeable and fanatical as the men are. You cannot say the same about the UK, its a sport to them, while its a culture to Puerto Rico. Mexico and Puerto Rico are 1 and 2 in any order.

          • Floyd is ppv king, he could sell any date in any city, but he is also an insecure egomaniac who can't handle rejection or things not going his way. Arum is a smart old devil, he knows how emotional unstable and immature Floyd is, and is using this to force Floyd's hand. Arum knows that Foyd's ego can't take being move of the date he wants and this will kill the fight. This is free market, put your product out there and people decides what to consume. This is a free country no nationality owns dates. This is about marketing look at the differences in the two Maidana undercards the first one was the most expensive undercard ever, the second one was was full of mismatches with Mexican fighters. Everyone praises Al Haymon like this genius, but I feel like he still learning the game. Comiting rookie mistakes.Don't forget that the southwest was part of Mexico that's why the name of the city and state are in Spanish Las Vegas Nevada. The cultural conection is there Mexican fans are keeping boxing alive, you have to get that market even if Floyd pulls another Guerrero, Maidana they need a LSC vs Abner Mares type of fight in the under card. Anyone remember whe Canelo told Floyd I will be in your under card if you face me in September, Floyd said no, Canelo fought Trout in San Antonio and mayweather ve Guerrero flopped. Then Floyd fought Canelo in September anyway. Canelo wants to be like JCC like DLH without paying his dues. Is like Khan who wants to be Mayweather so bad is like an obsession.

ODH wants Canelo to have the date even though he isn't the biggest earner and is playing the "nationalism" card. He is entitled but that doesn't mean he is going to get what he wants.
they are only trying to have leverage over floyd to get a better ppv splitt, but if floyd-pac gets made, canelo-cotto will move his date, no doubt...
honestly i doubt it gets made so soon..

              • LMAO at all the little girls here arguing over other grown mens ppv numbers. PPV numbers are irrelevant since they do nothing to profit my (fan) pockets. If Mayweather or Pacquiao dont fight each other Im not buying either of their fights. Thats how we should all be seeing it.

Floyd is free to fight on Cinco de Mayo, seems pretty American to me. Canelo can talk about it, Floyd will just do it.
