Professional boxing is about damage, about putting a hurt on someone.
The better you are at hurting your foe, the more entertaining you are. The more entertaining you are....the more $$$ you make.

Many boxers come from rough neighborhoods and are looked down at by the rest of society so there must be some element of being significant and respected.

Every boxer wants to earn the big money but it's more than being rich, it's the knowledge that you are one of the best boxers in the world and therefore can earn huge sums of money. There's the prestige of being a champion boxer, and being the best in your weight class in the entire world. How many people can really be sure they are the best (or one of the best) in their career field in the world? Not many. What a great feeling that has to be.

I'm sure there are plenty of boxers who really just enjoy fighting and hurting people and I'm even more sure that there's a little bit of that in every boxer.

There are a lot of reasons and I'm just scratching the surface here.
Damn bro, it couldnt have been said any better, really.

Descending the dark stair way the shining tile glared out as feet swept past back and forth. The pounding roared through the gym and up the stair way. Yesterday I had learned that the sound was a speed bag being worked over, the sound actually intinidating me for some reason or another.

Reaching the landing I stopped and watched as the boxers moved in front of the mirror. Their punches switfly cutting the air as their eyes stared off..... somehwere.

"Robbie.... good to see your back."! Paul walked towards me as he pointed the way to the locker room, cueing me to get ready. "You did good last night, really good for your first time." Paul followed me into the locker room as I opened a locker and began changing. "Theres a new kid that just joined, do you want to spar with him?" I looked up from the button on my jeans to notice that there was another boy changing on the same side of the locker room. The boys eyes transfixed upon my face, obviously awaiting my answer. It was my second night in a gym. I had boxed the night before with an experienced boxer but he had played with me. The cat and the mouse.

"Sure, Ill spar!" I was hesitant about boxing at first but found that after my first taste of leather, I wanted more. I changed and wrapped as Paul left the locker room. The sound of many voices now came from the gym floor as more and more people continued emerging from the stair way.

The people in the gym were the same, moving as they had the night before. Walking to the mirror I raise my fist to my face and begin moving my head, slipping imaginary punches with my mind. The reflection that I cast in the mirror only shadowed by my will to try, my will to succeed.

From the corner of my eyes I spot new faces........ two of them..... identical twins. Watching them move I saw that they both threw their punches the same as the coach had shown me. A short man followed closely behind their movements as they twisted and turned about the ring. Their long black hair curled over their black eyes, piercing through the strands. Their lean arms swining through the air, heads bobing to and fro.

They looked good in my eyes, obviously more experienced then me. "Robbie, your going to be working with Jim." Paul grabbed my arm and pulled me over to the ring. "JIMMY!!!" One of the twins dropped his fists and turned to face us. Paul let go of my arm, "This is Robbie, you two are going to work.... go get gloved up." Jim smiled and slid through the ropes to the equipment bin. "Do just as you have practiced, work the jab and catch his." Paul smiled, knocking his fist into my shoulder as he smiled, go get your mouth piece, your on................

The buzzer sounded as I shuffle towards him, Jimmy holding his hands high while walking alone the ropes. His eyes transfixed upon my chest he steps forward sticking his jab against the headgear, the leather scraping against my brow. As I watched Jimmy pulling his glove from my face, my pulse beat slowly into my heart.

"Stick your jab Robbie, you need to get off........" Jimmiy again lept forward, pounding his fist into my face. Stumbling back, I knew that I could not let this continue unreturned. Akwardly stepping forward, I lifted my elbow and popped my left jab. Jimmy easily slipped the punch as I was suspended into time........can you help me......?

The depths of the pulsations drifted about mind, some one said you loved..... Jimmys right glove returns to position as I returned, from somewhere. The left hook!!!!!!!

Everybody knows the deal was nitched.
Thats how it goes, and everybody knows.

"You gotta watch out for that right hand!!!" Pauls voice returns as Jimmy and I seemingly continue to tangle together, our arms twisted together seeking position. I looked outside of the ropes to see Paul, with his hand on his chin nodding up and down and the too and froe. Jimmy pushed my shoulders as I rocked backwards, my back leg bracing my stance. As his head moved towards me, I saw his glove twitch..... I had seen his right glove twitch........ The compounding inside of my mind left my vision blurred and hazed. From somewhere I throw my right hand as Jimmy continued in, the blow landing flush against his face.

"Datta way kid, get in their and give it to him good!!" Rodger voiced his support and approval while Jimmy stumbled backwards. Turning to see Rodgers, his eyes illuminated and alive. Pointing towards Jimmy, Rodgers opened his eyes wide and pointed me towards Jimmy, who had again reached his balance.

                Okay, I'll look the fool.

I would argue it's basically akin to our primal instincts to have an Alpha Male, from a subconscious perspective. If one studies primates, or just about any social animal, one thing that will be obvious is the role of the Alpha or dominant male. The only way to become the Alpha Male is to challenge and defeat or vanquish the Alpha. This is true with just about every social mamal, of which, we are one.

Now, while man has been "civilized", for lack of a better word, for thousands of years, we still have had chiefs where the only way to become leader of the clan was to defeat the reigning chief in combat. The Chief of the Clan was supposed to be head and shoulders above all the other men in the clan or tribe.

As we've advanced into an even more "civilized" culture, many of the "old" ways have been dismissed as barbaric and are no longer practiced, depending upon which civiliazation you live in. However, thousands of years of instincts are not overcome in a few hundred years of political correctness....if that long.

Obviously there are further reaching implications to our social history versus society now; but in regards to this particular topic, WE need to look up to someone. Someone has to be the Alpha Male and the purest arena to showcase this primal thirst is professional boxing where two men are stripped down to the bare essentials and asked to battle it out for superiority. Whoever owns the title of World Heavyweight Champion is, by definition, the Baddest Man on the Planet and Can Lick Any Son of a ***** in the House and is, hence, the Alpha Male.....which goes to the very core of our collective ID.

                How's that?

....oh, that's always why there is the desire to make the World Champ a "role model", even thought that's not fair to the man.

Though Ali and Louis utilized this phenomenon to its fullest affect.

                  Peace.
