Fighters age in the gym sparring, not on fight nights

A lot of people think fighters age through tough pro fights, while this is true in very grueling fights like Margs vs Cotto/Ward Gatti etc, most of the ageing and 'mileage' is more likely to occur during sparring.

I think a lot of trainers don't realise that sparring is just as damaging, if not more damaging than actual pro fights... headgear only protects from cuts and bruises but brain damage is likely worsened by head gear.

''Gym wars'' take more out of fighters than these pro fights you see on tv.

and fighters dont get old overnight

they get old over time and you see them getting old in the gym...reflexes, speed, legs, inability to pull the trigger amongst other things - you can see this **** in the gym and in sparring

Yes, but it is a necessary evil to prepare for pro fights. Sergio Martinez doesn't spar much, if at all, to conserve and preserve his body. It's one of the reasons he was knocked down so many times by Cotto. He didn't spar and wasn't used to getting hit. It's the reason much bigger punchers weren't able to get martinez out, but cotto, a relatively light puncher at 154/MW was able to destroy martinez.

I don't know man, if you were to compare Hopkins last performance before he fought Kovalev it was night and day.

I totally disagree with your statement. Headgear does protect a fighter. Where you get your fiction from? I do agree gym wars can do alot of damage to a fighter. Not because of the headgear but because of the number of sparring rounds and at times in the gym people tend to spar whoever is available beyond or below their weight class

AIBA confirms that headguards will be removed from men's amateur boxing at senior level but not for women boxers.

Gym Wars decrease a fighters longevity in the sport, but some fighters are more accustomed to it and handle punches better then others.... so i would say its very plausible.

My friend, I spar with headgear on, and some of the guys I have sparred, I can tell you now... THANKGOD for the headgear.

It's a huge difference, hence why they have changed the amateur game and removed the headgear, too many top touted am's were coming through with all this hype (no pun intended) and when they got clocked by 8/10oz gloves without headgear everything changed.
