Comments Thread For: Stevenson: Pascal's ranking was a gift, he didn't earn it!

Over the past few months WBC #1 ranked contender Jean Pascal has hurled a series of insults at the organization's champion Adonis Stevenson who is also the Ring magazine champion. Pascal and his team had lobbied for a 50-50 purse split but Stevenson said that the WBC has already ruled that Pascal will receive 30% as the challenger. A tentative date of April 4th, 2015 has been set aside for the fight.

Stevenson can receive a much larger payday against Kovalev.

The fight would be for ALL THE TITLES at 175.

Main Events wants it, HBO wants it, Kovalev wants it, Stevenson says he wants it, boxing writers want it, boxing fans want it.

The only barrier preventing it seems to be Al Haymon.

I seriously doubt Pascal is more popular. It's probably 50-50 but who cares. The main thing is Pascal may be brutally retired if he steps in the ring with Superman

Stevenson dont want to fight kovalev. He hiding behind al haymon. Its funny pascal never use to call out adonis til after the fonfara fight. He wanted nothing to do with him prior to that. Plus adonis needs a reality check he didnt earn a shot at chad dawson. He was given a gift himself.

Kinda like how Superman is going to get brutally retired when he steps into the ring with The Krusher?

Not sure about that. Pascal and Stevenson are long established names in Quebec and putting the two together would be a bigger event than Stevenson-Kovalev.

I'm not sure... we'd have to ask our Canadian friends, but I get the sense that Pascal remains the better known through his longevity (and beating Bute can't have hurt) and that negative press about Stevensons past may have harmed his popularity.

It's one of those situations where the challenger may bring more to the table. Either way, it's likely that Stevenson stands to make more $ from fighting Pascal at 50 / 50 than anyone else at 70 / 30 in Canada. TBH I suspect that Stevenson - Pascal might well outsell even a Kovalev fight in Quebec,

I think we just have to wait this one out though. Pascal is now the sole remaining 'name' at LHW that hasn't been beaten by either Kovalev or Stevenson, and as such is in a very strong bargaining position.

I've mentioned previously the idea that the WBC could in principle make Pascals interim status transferable (as they did in GGG vs Rubio) which would certainly up the ante - and could be beneficial from Pascals point of view that he could almost certainly demand a higher price for a Kovalev fight if the mando status was on the line or alternatively upbid Stevenson with the threat of walking to Kovalev if he doesn't get the terms he wants.

And Quackenson's title shot was a gift, he didn't earn it either.

                    Quality of opponent

Pascal has fought way better opposition. Bernard twice. Adonis is an absolute delusional classless fool. Pascal deserves the fight and will beat Stevenson, who is a one dimensional plodding, gassed out one trick pony. No surprises here.
