Comments Thread For: Manny Pacquiao-Chris Algieri: Pre-Fight Report Card

by Cliff Rold - It’s been awhile since a pay-per-view star has used the medium to face such an unfamiliar face. Maybe the last time was Oscar De La Hoya-Felix Sturm?

    It’s been awhile.

Unlike Sturm, Chris Algieri is American, has been seen on US airwaves, and has been marketed hard to casual audiences where hardcore skeptics abound. There is also, unlike the case for De La Hoya, no looming superfight.

Oh, sure, there is always the tease of a fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. Boxing’s longest running set of blue balls shouldn’t be considered close to relief just because there is the latest rash of chatter. When the fight everyone wants is the one seemingly they can never have, this is where it ends up.

What Algieri could do is put a fork in the conversation. Can Chris Algieri play the same kind of spoiler role Sturm (almost) did a decade ago?

The biggest disparity in this fight for many will be in experience level. Pacquiao is a historically proven fighter coming off his best official win, the rematch victory over Bradley, since a 2009 win over Miguel Cotto. Algieri has come from prospect to contender to titlist just this year.

Algieri is a good fighter. We’ve seen that much. He nearly shut out Emanuel Taylor to start his 2014 campaign. The same Taylor gave Adrien Broner everything he could handle later in the year. There is still debate about the rightful winner of Algieri’s 140 lb. title win over Ruslan Provodnikov. This corner scored it 6-6, with a two point final edge to Provodnikov based on first round knockdowns.

Style wise Algieri is a dangerous fight. But Manny is Manny, he will find a way to get Algieri out of there.

People don't understand the extent of the beatdown that's coming to Algieri Saturday night. Whether Manny has lost something along the way or not, he's going to beat the hell out of Chris. I'll be shocked if there is a round 7.

        My thoughts exactly.

This mis-match is only slightly better than Garcia-Salka.

Why does Pac have an "A" for power? You even mentioned how, despite stunning opponents, hasn't stopped anybody since 2009. That is just ridiculous, and absolutely unjustifiable... Coming from a huge Pac fan as well...

He should have a solid "B" for power at WW. That's not even debatable when you've only stopped 3 guys in 12 fights at 135 and above (well, 4, but Oscar quit on his stool and was not close to being stopped or KO'd by Pac's power). Cotto could easiily have finished the last 2 minutes of that fight as well... He's had one legitimate KO in 12 fights, and that was a doozy of a KO against Hatton...

But we'll say 3 KO/TKO's in 12 fights, for a KO percentage of 25%... LOL... Slightly superior to Malignaggi's KO rate. Haha yeah, it blows Rod Salka's KO percentage out of the water, doe!

            SMH... A for power...

              Yeah... No...

Algieri has proved he's at least fringe world class by beating a man only world class opponents have beaten, and had to go life and death in order to do so (Bradley, and El Maestro).

And his shutout of Taylor, looks a beaut now as well, after he wailed away on Broner for 12 rounds, and barely lost. Even though Broner isn't what he was cut out to be, he's still a world level contender at the least...

So stop with all ths "Salka/Garcia" rubbish. It makes you look foolish, and like a blind anti-Pac fan.

Many times in history, a young champion, or up and coming legitimate top-10 contender (there's no way he's not deserving of a top 10 ranking at 140), was given the shot against the one of the best in the world.

And at least Algieri presents a different dynamc, and style-challenge than the flat-footed, slow ****ers like Maidana, Provodnikov, etc.

                Joey's right.

Salka was barely a cut above plucking some guy out of a 24 hour fitness who did some elementary boxing drills so he could lose a couple of pounds. The guy was the 76th rated dude in his class.

Algieri is the 7th rated light-welter in the world...one single spot behind Adrien Broner.

                Comparing the two is idiotic.

He may be better than Salka but he still has no business being in the ring with Pacquiao.
