i get the sympathy for Walters, i like him a lot too but cmon guys you cant be serious...beating a guy coming from a TKO loss & the after Rigo version of Nonito "aka im just looking for the big punch now" Donaire is noway getting you a FOTY...i mean if he had 4 of those kind of wins this year like Donaire in 2012, okay i would give it a pass but 2 of those are not enough.

Crawford would have the advantage cause he got the chance to get 3 of those okay wins...i know the Gamboa performance was freaking excellent but lets not forget that Gamboa was inactive, horrible undersized and that in combination with his shaky chin, those kind of combinations are never ending good

Im no friend of "becoming FOTY just because of 1 great win" and if so it has to be one of the greatest wins in recent boxing history...Kovalev is a great fighter but after the first 2 minutes Hopkins was in survivalmode, Kovalev still did the right things to not let Hopkins outsmart him so he gets credit for that (even though we didnt know if Hopkins even tried that after the KD)

I dont want to make a pick but i mabe would go with Crawford cause he fought against guys coming to fight and not to survive but if Kovalev gets the FOTY i wouldnt really complain either...

when you have to ask this when trying to figure out the best year in boxing, you know it's been a bad, bad year.


the fighter of the year's accomplishments are becoming less and less worthy of being remembered.

Yeah, there's not any fighter who had a particularly memorable year. Kovalev beating Hopkins was nice, Walters's emergence was nice, and Crawford is on the verge of establishing lightweight dominance, but there's no real "Wow!" year by anyone.

This has been an awful, awful year for boxing.

Crawford beat Burns who had just "won" against Beltran and then beat Gamboa who other than his name hadnt done anything of note.

Kov beat BHop which was a good win but one win shouldnt get you FOTY

Canelo beat Angulo and Lara but Lara was a bit funny though i thought he won but it can go either way.

Khan beat Collazo who had just got a big win, yes it was Ortiz but oh well that still better than the others other than Bhop and if he beats Alexander, who is still highly regarded, then why not

I'm pretty good with Rocky Gonzalez - but you just know a little guy ain't getting it (and TBF outside of Yaegashi his wins have been no better than Sergeis)

Probably Kovalev then; although his other two fights in 2014 weren't against anyone particularly special he still did what he had to.

It's just I don't think there was any real standout .. a few guys had one top win, but no-one had a really special year overall. I know it shouldn't be allowed to carry over, but possibly part of my lean towards Kovalev was that he was a possible contender in 2013.

Crawford and Walters are OK too, but with only 2 fights apiece (and the Axemans UD taking place over a distinctly faded Darchinyan) I'm definitely so-so.

Of course there is one fight that might be able to provide a clearer answer (though again - it'd be a little guy so ... ?).

If..(and it's a big if) Naoya Inoue can make a 2 division jump and convincingly beat Superflyweight #1 Narvaez he would eclipse both Kovalev and Gonzalez IMO. Problem is we won't find out til Dec 30, so any discussion at this point may well be redundant.
