  • Prime Mike Tyson best opponents faced?

Who did Mike Tyson face that you could say is a worthy adversary to make us all believe he was the absolute beast that most of us believe he was back in the 80s and early 90s?

I just want to know because I think when we look further down the line when he faced top quality opposition we only then began to see his limitations.

My best bet for his best win would probably be 38yo Larry Holmes who never aged well with his boxing career and was coming off two consecutive losses prior to fighting Tyson.

Was prime Mike Tyson even really properly tested...
I guess Buster Douglas could be one to talk about that and whilst he was a good fighter he was no world class fighter, so what makes people think Tyson would beat champions like Lennox Lewis, Wladimir/Vitali Klitschko and Holyfield if all those fights happened in the 80s if obviously both fighters were in their respective 'prime'?

Spinks easily the best Mike faced, that guy was coming off of wins over Holmes for Gods sake.

Then Smith, Thomas and Tucker were solid opposition. Let's not sleep on Bruna either, guy had immense power.

Holmes probably comes in below those guys. But the fact is and this is why Tyson was regarded as such a beast at the time and even now, it's because he annihilated guys, he decimated them. Apart from Bones...who else truly tested him? Yeah some guys took him rounds but Mike toyed with those fools.

These weren't great opponents but Tyson showed his greatness, he was clearly 3 or 4 levels above these guys, which is why he gets labeled a great.

        Well stated.

of course the boxrec jockeys (not the ts...I'm blanketing in general) will ALWAYS bring up the "who did he fight" nonsense.

It's not always cut and dry when assessing a fighter based solely on the level of opposition they've faced.

when they're 3-4 levels above as you state...you see the greatness.

Show me another fighter at 20 years old who was destroying everyone in a division.

Really? Watching it live was painfully boring.

Were you hoping for Tyson to decimate him?

I only ask...because I thought it was pretty crazy watching Bones stand up to some of those HUGE bombs.

I was hoping for an action fight, and Smith was grabbing and holding the entire time.

I haven't watched that fight since it happened, so maybe I'd see it differently now with no anticipation going in.
