Comments Thread For: Who's The Champ, Who's The Best - Part I

By Jake Donovan - Back when boxing was at the forefront of major sports, fans needn’t look any further than the championship spot to figure out the best fighters in each weight class.

There were occasional exceptions, but for the most part THE champ and the best were one and the same. That claim is not as easy to make in an era where true title lineage easily gets lost in a sea of alphabet titlists and preferred network choices (read: TV-friendly fighters).

As fans, network brass and even writers who should otherwise exude objectivity continue to gravitate towards their preferred style of fighters, greatness or championship status doesn’t enter into the equation quite as often as should be the case.

Because, let’s face it, having earned the right to becoming the true champion – or the best – should always warrant recognition.

The question remains, however, whom exactly do we recognize?

Thanks to the giving nature of the alphabet organizations, there are 78 different fighters claiming title status. That’s an average of more than four fighters per weight class – an absurdly high number especially when considering there are seven divisions featuring unified titlists, including Floyd Mayweather Jr. who holds two belts each at welterweight and super welterweight. wow, boxingscene will recognise a champion in the lightweight division after the crawford/beltran fight....they are saying it's the "two best rated lws", that's ****ing ridiculous, have they even heard of Mickey Bey? Now I'm not saying Bey's a great fighter but the guy just beat the then top rated lw on the planet. what had Beltran done that's better than that? Beat Usmanee? lol or lose every time he has taken a step up?

On a side note, Butterbean (76-10 50KOs) lost by KO2 to a 41 year old (1-1 1KO) fighter (both opponents in their debut fights) last year. Bet the guy had zero amateur fights as well. So basically he lost to a guy off the streets.

Do think the guy who beat Butterbean is No.1 heavyweight now ... even better than Shannon Briggs?

Not here. Crawford moved ahead of Vazquez after the Gamboa win. As to Beltran, his recent run dating to the Lundy win is much more impressive than Bey winning a debatable decision over MV and not much else. And it's not just BoxingScene. Crawford-Beltran is 1-2 at Ring, TBRB, and ESPN.

Tyson Fury's height, reach, under-rated power and sheer unpredictability would give him a better chance than anybody of upsetting Wlad, imo.

tyson fury is also a bit of a clown with questionable dedication to his craft, shaky legs and a weak chin. Wlad would stop him in less than 5.

Except Bey didn't win. And sure as hell isn't anywhere near as good as the Crawford/Beltran winner. Beltran did beat the hell out of Ricky Burns, which is better than anything Bey's done.

It's absurd to think Mickey Bey is anywhere near the conversation for best LW.
