Comments Thread For: Byrd: If Algieri Boxes Smart, Capable of Beating Pacquiao

Former heavyweight champion Chris Byrd is giving undefeated Chris Algieri (20-0, 8KOs) a good shot to defeat WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao on November 22nd at the Venetian in Macau, China.

Algieri is a lot taller and also longer, with a good jab and he knows how to boxing from a distance. If he put those attributes to good use, as he did against Ruslan Provodnikov in June to capture the WBO junior welterweight crown, then Byrd gives him a very good shot to win.

Provodnikov blitzed Algieri at the start and Chris did well to make it out of round one but as the fight wore on the Russian dropped his intensity and just followed his man around the ring throwing not much more than a single punch here and there, many of which missed. Pacquiao won't be doing that. Algieri is slick, has a long jab and knows how to box effectively on the back foot but he's taking a big step up here. He might be able to compete with Manny, maybe well into the fight, but once he gets hurt - as I think he will be - I would expect Pac to cut off his escape route and get the stoppage.

the one thing that has seperated algieri from most of the competition he has faced so far, is his confidence, the guy is confident to the point of delusion and it wins him fights

If Pacquiao after 17 years or so doesn't feel like chasing Algieri around the ring, we might get a closer fight than expected. Don't know if Algieri can actually win, but I doubt it.

Most likely we get another Mosley fight, where Pac wins every round but looks unimpressive.

i thought a cherry pick fight is when the other guy have no chance of winning? reading all these comments from trainers, pass boxers, sparring partners, boxing experts/writers, a lot of them are actually favoring algieri. i mean i didnt see these type of comments favoring maidana when floyd fought him?
