Comments Thread For: Kovalev’s Trainer: Andre Ward Needs to Meet Us At 175

The last top light heavyweight to challenge Andre Ward was Chad Dawson, who was the lineal champion at 175 when he boiled down to 168 for a Ward bout. Dawson’s team afterward said that making weight had hurt him; Ward dominated Dawson and scored a 10th-round technical knockout.

Sergey Kovalev’s team was asked about possibly facing Ward shortly after shut out Bernard Hopkins. Kovalev makes 175 fairly easily — trainer John David Jackson said his fighter comes into camp in the mid 180s and was at about 179 pounds with four weeks to go. HBO’s unofficial scales had Kovalev rehydrating from about 174 to 188 pounds on fight night.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Chavez Jr is Ward's size or even bigger. I agree with him about catch weights though.

light heavyweight in the olympics starts at 75 kg, which is 165 pounds. and ends at 81 kg which is 178 lbs.

Ward is fine at 168, I'd like this fight to be made though. At maybe 172 .

Didn't Ward start at middle weight?
What is going on with his contract (is it based on number of fights left or years left)?

Yes, at the pros he did start at middleweight -- that's precisely the division at which Ward was knocked down (face first) by the famous Boone.

Read again Ward is sucking down to fight smaller guys, Your statement is like saying 169 is Light heavyweight in the pros so whats the biggie if Ward gains 1 pound to Fight Kovalev ?

Ward showed no interest in fighting Kovalev -- at 175 or even at a catchweight.

Instead, Ward "called out" Golovkin several times at 168 -- but after Golovkin asked for "extensive drug testing" I doubt that Ward will call him again. Ward also called out Froch (at the Wembley Stadium as venue) and Chavez Jr... Froch ruled out such a fight and Chavez Jr. is still in a promotional limbo.

I like Ward a lot, but I think we have to accept he is retired as a fighter. Even if he does start fighting in say a years time, he will need tune ups, and by that time, he'll probably be too old to even bother.

yet this logic doesn't work for GGG who apparently is ducking ward for not moving up.
