Matthysse is the most relentless and offensive minded of the three. He is a brawler first and foremost, he does have some skill, but not on pair with Kovalev and Golovkin, specially in the footwork (cutting the ring) department.

Golovkin is a picture perfect pressure fighter, very methodical only attacks when he feels he'll land with true impact. He goes to the body religiously, never forget to land a right or left hook to the ribs and he has that piston like jab.

Kovalev is more of a boxer-puncher out of the three, he's the more fleet footed of the three, he usually doesn't put all that pressure on guys, he circles while moving forward, throw a combination and steps out, jabs well to the body.

They are very different fighters, the only thing that they share is the punching power.
Matthysse can easily cut off a ring, not a problem for him. For his division though, he's easily the smallest of the three and I don't think he has quite the PFP power the other two do. I'd venture he has a better chin than Kovalev though.

People are high on Kovalev right now, but if Matthysse can get the right fights this year, they'll be back on him too. Every fighter who fights the best takes an L at some point and then it's all "he's a brawler", "exposed" etc. A lot of people were saying about Kovalev before he beat Hopkins, some are still saying it about Golovkin.

judah, alexander and garcia(alexander and garcia anyway) are better than anyone golovkin or kovalev have faced(prior to hopkins), esspecially in terms of chin

and as far as im concerned there is no way matthysse lost to judah or alexander, the alexander fight esspecially would have been like giving hopkins the win over kovalev

Golovkin and Kovalev are skilled fighters who just happen to possess frightening power.

Matthysse is a good puncher, with very little in the way of skill.

        Different level fighters.

            See that just isnt true.

Crazy how underrated Matthysse is now. Obviously its a backlash from the ridiculous hype he was getting pre Garcia (myself included)

Matthysse has decent boxing ability himself.

But yes, GGG and Kovalev are more skilled.

I was always excited by Matthysse, mainly because he is a super entertaining fighter with power. I knew he had limitations, but still thought he would beat Danny, as fighters who get hit a lot like DSG can, well usually face a downward spiral against big punchers. Danny impressed me by tightening up his game in that fight, and I never thought he had that in him. I knew from the Soto fight that Matthysse had glaring defensive vulnerabilities of his own and was going through wear and tear. The offensively talented but modest powered Soto was buzzing and working him and Soto is a small guy. Matthysse though is all balls to the wall, which is still great in my book

GGG and Kovalev are a different type of animal though and the only attributes they share with Matthysse is power and aggressiveness.

                    I disagree.

I felt this way long before his crazy hype kicked in. To me he is much closer to a Provodnikov than he is a Golovkin.

dude, provo, has no jab, stops everything with his face, no head movement and tends to gas late in the fight. lucas is no ggg nor kovalev, but he isn't close to provo at all.
