Comments Thread For: Defiant Roy Jones Jr. Still Campaigning For Cruiser Belt

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Roy Jones Jr. has a high-profile announcing gig with HBO, he hasn’t fought for a moderately recognized world championship belt in nearly five years and his recent run of opponents more closely resembles a Soviet-era track and field team than a recognizable list of modern title contenders.

But if you think that means his pursuit for real ring supremacy has ended, well, let’s just say “ya’ll must’ve forgot” just how long he’s willing to endure before another chance presents itself.

Now within three months of his 46th birthday – and in the long shadow cast by still-relevant two-time nemesis Bernard Hopkins – the Pensacola, Fla.-born Jones maintains that the same patience that he used while waiting for his first title fight in 1993 will serve him well until the next one comes along.

“Why would I walk away?” he said. “I hear people say it and I do understand, but it’s not like I’m going to the NFL, it’s not like I’m not going to Major League Baseball, it’s not like I’m not going to go on the golfing tour. I’m not doing any of that. So what else am I going to do? The only place where I can set a real example is in a boxing ring, because that’s what I’ve been doing my whole life. Lebedev is a very ordinary fighter. I can totally understand Jones Jr's confidence in performing better in a rematch.

Apparently, the KO Jones suffered nearly 3.5 years ago by Lebedev gave him amnesia. Here's a reminder, Roy. Smelling salts didn't even rouse you. Time to hang them up, man.
