Sorry but age is part of the story ever since Bernard turned 40. That's the problem with fighting Bernard: Before the fight before before training camp, the moment the contract is signed Bernard's age is a factor. Even if Kovalev KOs Bernard in the first round there's always going to be the sidenote that this was a 50 year old Bernard and not a prime Hopkins.Comment

I mean, Hopkins is 50, and would definitely beat Kovalev if he has enough left. I hate to make excuses ahead of time, but it's the truth.Comment

With his style, Hopkins pretty much fights for a total of 30 secs per round. He controls the pace and almost never tires. He wins the ugliest rounds because he'll land 1-2 clean shots and use every trick in the book to not fight.
Only fast boxers that throw in volume beat Bernard. I don't see that in Kovalev. His only chance is to land something lucky. If he does, he as to be a one-punch KO because Bernard will get up and adjust.Comment

So hes covered either way then, if he wins hes something special for beating Kovalev at 50 but if he loses he was too old to be fighting him in the first place, kind of makes the fight pointless in my eyes. Its a no lose situation for Hopkins and a no win situation for Kovalev.Comment

You don't have to pretend Hopkins's age isn't a factor, though. Hopkins would beat Kovalev a few years ago, we all know that. The Hopkins who beat Tarver would kick Kovalev's ass. It's okay to acknowledge that and still love the fight for what it is.Comment
