roy jones vs calzaghe in july

Jones in the frame for Calzaghe

Joe Calzaghe is being lined up to fight American legend Roy Jones Jr in July.

Calzaghe's stock has rocketed following his masterful points win over Jeff Lacy in Manchester on Sunday morning and he now has a raft of lucrative options.

"We are looking at July next and the ideal opponent would be Roy Jones," said Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren. "I am sure Joe would do a job on him.

"But Joe will take a break and we'll talk to the TV companies because Joe's reputation has risen significantly."

The IBF and WBO super middleweight champion's biggest decision is whether to remain at 12 stone and attempt to unify the remaining two portions of the title or move up to the more lucrative light heavyweight division.

Neither of the other two super middleweight champions, Mikkel Kessler or Markus Beyer, are big names in America, while Jones is big box office.

Light heavyweight might represent Joe's future and Roy Jones is a fight I would make in a flash
    Frank Warren
    Calzaghe's promoter

Jones, 37, is a four-weight world champion but has lost his last three fights, twice to former light heavyweight king Antonio Tarver.

Tarver has also been mentioned as a possible opponent, but he is set to fight former undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins in June.

Another possible opponent is Sheffield's IBF light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods, who has been angling for a match with Calzaghe for some time.

Warren said: "Clinton Woods would be a decent fight but it would be difficult to make and it might also be seen as a step backwards for Joe by those in the United States.

"The same goes for the other super middleweight champions which is why light heavyweight might represent Joe's future and why Roy Jones is a fight I would make in a flash."

I will not pay to see this fight. I think Cal should fight Kessler or Glen Johnson in June instead of Jones.

This is ****ing ridiculous, worse than Judah/Mayweather. What has Calzaghe got to gain from this fight? He has to dominate Roy Jones just to keep his rep where it is. It wont improve it at all. What does beating a shot Roy Jones prove? And Frank Warren, who has gone up in my estimation recently and who i think should still be promoting Hatton, is off his head. He has been saying over and over that Roy is shot, and before that he said Jones wasnt as good as he thought he was. And if Calzaghe loses then everything that he did against Lacy will be, rightly, forgotten. Clinton Woods has a reason to fight Roy - he could avenge a loss and it would look good on Woods' record. Calzaghe is a level above though and should absolutely NOT fight Roy Jones. It would do nothing for his legacy, and would basically mean his is wasting yet another fight. There are loads of people that would fight Calzaghe. Kessler, Green, Glen Johnson, Antonio Tarver, Clinton Woods, Adamek, Zsolt Erdei - all these fights would be much, much more meaningful than a Roy Jones fight.

Can you tell I'm just a TAD against Calzaghe/Jones!?

If Roy beats Cal, it will be a good comeback for his career. I don't see Cal knocking him out, I will give Roid a chance to win this, even today.

I agree with some comments that have been made already, this fight is pretty pointless. The only person who this could benefit would be Roy and that would only be because if he won he would get more big paydays again and another chance at the big titles. If this fight does happen i know in my mind that Calzaghe will win but it will gain him nothing as Roy has already been beaten by 2 fighters who i persopnally would not call greats at all.

Kessler or Beyer are good fights for Calzaghe or a British matchup against Clinton Woods. He has everything to gain from these guys

As everyone has already stated, this fight is pointless.

Joe wins, then people will question him. He has to knock him out, and even then, he is still supposed too.

Roy wins, and Joe is called overrated.

                  Bad fight.

This fight shouldnt happen. If Calzaghe wins it'll prove nothing as Jones is shot...and if Jones wins (which I dont think theres any chance of) then I dont think it will do that much for his reputation or legacy because people will go back to saying that Calzaghe slaps and has no power. The question marks over Jones' glass jaw will still remain.

If this fight gets made the only reason for it happening is because Jones is still big box office and Calzaghe wants a big pay day after being in the shadows for so long. The fight itself will be meaningless and imo result in a comfortable win for Calzaghe.
