OH really? is that why lewis was losing on the scorecards? the cut is what saved lewis man. everybody knows lewis was getting punched constantly and only landed that uppercut

there were six rounds left to go and vitali was only up by two points. lennox had taken over the fight and the last two rounds before the stoppage were his best two rounds of the fight the last of which he dominated and hurt vitali who was already fading bad.

vitali came out strong to begin the fight and did very well but lennox already took over by the time the fight was stopped. lennox may have clipped a few guys early but he was always a slow starter, he was in the same predicament against bruno, tucker, mercer and others. fell behind early only to catch up an usually win within the distance.

considering he seldom boxed guys taller than himself, he hadnt had any time to prepare for vitali as an opponent and he (vitali) came out very fast and strong early it makes sense that he would fall behind considering his tendency to be very patient and methodical. it also makes sense that he would have knocked vitali out regardless if you look at the big picture of the fight and dont get hung up on the first three rounds alone.

The story is Vitali got TKO'd but a punch.

It's like asking what would have happened had Leonard not KO'd Hearns, had Froch not KO'd Taylor or Toney v Nunn, Foreman Moorer etc.

The fact is, it was a punch or a series of punches that caused a cut the same way a series of punches could cause a KO. If Vitali hadn't been hit with those punches he wouldn't have been stopped.

The record will show that Lewis beat Vitali, had Vitali continued to get hit with that cut I have absolutely no doubt it would have caused permanent damage to that eye. One of the worst cuts in boxing.
