Given the suspect nature of his loss to Margarito and Manny, I think Cotto is on the cusp of ATG. I am not going to penalize Cotto for losing to plaster or a guy who was most likely riding high on performance shakes at the time. No apologies.

He affirmed his status as an ATG when he made history for Puerto Rico. Add lineal MW champ to his lengthy accomplishments and the answer is clear. MC is an ATG.

But he was an exceptional fighter, a great power puncher at 140 and an exceptional boxer/puncher at 147 who managed a decent run at 154 and just pulled off one of the great upsets at 160 and is one of the few fighters since Hagler to hold the "lineal" middleweight title.

Sadly his biggest nights were against welterweight beast Margarito, p4p great Pacquiao and defensive wizard Mayweather...they all ended in defeats.

But we should never forget his close but decisive victory over a better version of Mosley than what May or Pac faced and the fact that he beat a guy who was supposed to stop him in Martinez. Who knows, a win over Canelo and a legitimate middleweight may elevate him even further.
Wait, why would a loss against a disgraced Margarito be one of Cotto's biggest nights and not his rematch when he darn near shut out Margarito and retired him?

Cotto isn't an ATG but I think he could have beaten anyone from 140-154. He would have been an underdog in a lot of those bouts and probably would have lost to the likes of Leonard and Duran, but he could have won on any given day. If he were to beat Floyd he'd jump into ATG status for me, a win over Canelo wouldn't do it as I think Canelo has potential but is limited because of his corner.

Cotto's loss to Margarito was suspect but not his loss to Pacquiao.

Martinez at MW for the lineal title is most memorable. People will downgrade it, but the first round is unforgettable. The underdog and smaller man coming out and putting the true MW champion on his ass 3 times. It is in my 5 most memorable moments since 2007 when I started watching boxing; Margarito making Cotto quit, Mayweather pull counter vs. Hatton, Martinez one punch KO vs. Williams, Marquez KOing Pacquiao, and Cotto putting Martinez down 3 times.

Cotto is not an all time great, not taking anything away from him

He is definitely one of the best fighters of his generation

He is popular, he has an amateur pedigree, and he has been in some exciting fights but I just don't see Cotto being competitive or a champion in any and every era

Imagine Cotto in the era prior to his own Ike Quartey, ODLH, Trindad, and Mosley....or the Curry, Breland, Starling era...or earlier era's

He'd lose some and win some but the term all time great is loosely thrown around.

He is in the same boat as Bradley. Just under ATG because he couldn't beat them either. Bradley twice with Pacquiao, Cotto with Pac & Floyd.

Unless Cotto beats GGG & Canelo or Bradley unifies 147 or 154 when the Top 2leave..
