If that rematch had happened it would of been a sanctioned slaying.

Dawson has always been overrated. He beat a drained Adamek, then went on a run against an old division and had trouble doing it. Got his stylistic win over Hopkins. I fully expected Karpency to trouble Dawson.

Dawson always had the physical talent to be a great fighter, but he has a poor attitude and is not mentally tough which is evident by how many times he switched trainers (10 times). Chad's skills eroded from switching trainers way too many times. He looked great under Floyd Sr because Floyd disciplined him and made sure he was always prepared for a fight, but what look what happened after he left Floyd? He looked a lot worse under Eddie Muhammad.

Dawson is done, he's been given so many opportunities to redeem himself. He needs to retire because if he continue fighting he will continue losing.

Dawson's defense has always been borderline bad, even with Floyd Sr. Physical tools? He had fast hands, size, and that's about it. Chad never came across as a smart boxer.. just a guy who does the same thing over and over, which is fine as long as it works, but when he runs into a problem, there's no answer.

Chad was good both offensively and defensively just watch his earlier fights. He switched trainers 10 times, that should tell you about his attitude and mentality.

Most of the time it takes a while for a boxer to get used to his trainer. When you switch trainers 10 times you are getting mixed signals because each trainer is different they have their own different way of trying to get the best out of their boxers. The first sign of Dawson's skills eroding was when he left Floyd Sr for Eddie Muhammad. All his fights under Eddie Muhammad (his current trainer) he looked terrible, he has lost three times under EM. He wasn't as sharp or as fluid as he used to be under EM, that's a sign of EM being soft on him during training camp.

Another mistake of Chad was changing his team in the middle of the Hopkins fight. I think Chad would have beaten Hopkins easier had he stuck with Steward, but what did he do? He hired John Scully who hasn't trained him in 6 years and has very little experience in championship fights. He struggled badly against Hopkins and the strategy that Scully implemented (fighting Hopkins flat-footed and trying to knock him out) was ineffective, it was only because of Dawson's talent that he was able to squeak out a decision. Also Dawson is a mentally weak boxer, who is a type of boxer that can have his confidence easily derailed. Everytime he steps in the ring he looks like he is questioning himself and that is not a fighter who is confident, that is a fighter who is done.

Chad was put on the canvas when he was with Sr too, as well as getting beat in sparring against Dirrell. Sr called him Chad "******ed" Dawson.

He's obviously not all there mentally, but the switch to Scully was probably a good choice. He looked much better against Hopkins than he did against Diaconu, when he was trained by Steward.

And that incident where Dawson got beat by Dirrell in sparring was before he fought Adamek, I believe it was in preparation for the Adamek fight. Dirrell didn't even make a big deal about it. Sr was just venting off frustration because he was fired.

Chad looked different when he fought Hopkins, he was fighting flat-footed and not taking advantage of his height and reach. He was trying to fight Hopkins in the inside and he fell right into Hopkins trap, just poor preparation and poor strategy by Scully. At times he was charging at Hopkins which was unusual. It was only because of Chad's talent and physical skills that he was able to squeak out a decision against Hopkins.

Steward would have not allowed Chad to fight like that, Steward would have made Dawson fight tall and fleet-footed against Hopkins. Chad looked "poor" (he really didn't) against Diaconu because he was inactive for 9 months and Steward only trained Chad for 4 weeks, but he was still able to beat Diaconu decisively. So you can see how switching trainers has effected him. Chad was switching trainers a lot before he fought Adamek and that was okay against C and D level boxers, but once he got to the world class level, Chad needed a trainer that would discipline him and get him preprepared for fights. Switching trainers four or five times at the world class level just made him worse. He should have stuck with Floyd Sr or at least Steward. Scully and EM were not good for him. Now his confidence is just shot, it doesn't matter who trains him, he's not going to be competing at the world class level anymore.

I guess Dawson can forget about that rematch now.
