Vitali is no amateur now, he has vastly improved while Oleg has not improved much. His weak chin will betray him. Right now, I can't see him winning against Vitali.

Maskaev never knocked out Vitali in the ameaturs as he wants you to believe. Vitali's corner stopped the fighter after the first round, because Vitali injured his hand, and the corner didn't want to further hurt it, as he was preparing for Kickboxing championship at Paris.Originally posted by FibreOpticIs this guy for real? He wants Vitali. He thinks he can beat him based on the fact that Oleg beat Vitali in the amateurs. Before he steps up, why doesn't Maskaev try to get a rematch with McCall, Tua, Johnson, Whitaker, or Sanders?
And of course if the corner halts a bout, it's ruled as a TKO, but its the type of TKO, you would rather not have. No where in the fight did Maskaev have Vitali hurt, or on the ground or anything similiar to the matter.Last edited by Enayze; 01-25-2005, 09:10 PM.Comment

You guys are making too big of a deal about the headgear. It's there to protect you from cuts and make it so that every little jab and light punch is softened a bit. A punch that would knock you out without protection would do so even if you were wearing headgear. A KO occurs because you're head is smashed back so violently that your brain is jarred loose from its contact with the inside of your skull. A relatively thin layer of material is not going to prevent your head from snapping back. You'd need some kind of steel neck brace apparatus to accomplish that, and then you'd just get laughed out of the gym.
I've been hit with headgear and without and never noticed much of a difference except that your face is not so sore afterwords. A nice shot is a nice shot, and a puncher like Maskaev would KO a guy if he hit him flush on the chin regardless of what he had on his head. Chalk that loss up to inexperience and not a fault with Vit's chin.Comment

I read an interview with the judge that was judging that fight. They stopped the fight because Vitaliy kept hitting Maskaev with the injured right hand. What's with Vitaliy and his hands, anyway? I never heard anybody having so many problems with hands after the fight. I hope this is nothing serious, it would suck if he had any problems with fighting on.Originally posted by EnayzeMaskaev never knocked out Vitali in the ameaturs as he wants you to believe. I think that this is what you are talking about.
Here, the details of this fight described by former official, Vladimir Zolotaryov, who was present at that fight. “When talking about that fight, it’s necessary to begin with Ukrainian Games, that took place in spring of 1991 in Lutsk. Vitali while carring out three fights, won all of them in clear advantage, and injured his right fist in the last fight. Then he took the third place at the USSR Games, without taking a break for his hand to heal. Following that, he passed qualifications and made it into the championship of USSR Armed Forces. We’ll skip details of those fights, and focus on the final fight in Tashkent. The matter of fact, we didn’t have any desire to go there since Vitali had to prepare for Kickboxing world championship that took place in July in Paris.
We wanted to give Vitali time to heal so that he would be prepared for that championship since going to the world championship was much more prestigious. But the head of sports (USSR) gave order not only to go to Tashkent but also to return with a victory. That’s were the fight between Vitali and Oleg took place. I perfectly remember that fight. It was a semifinal. In Vitali’s corner – Michael Jakovlevich Matsih, and I was one of tournament’s judges. Before the fight, Michael and I warned Vitali that he must protect his right hand or we will remove him from competition.
Vitali carried out the first round strongly, boxing with only left. But at the end of round, Maskaev rushed towards him and Vitali met him with a right. In between rounds we warned Vitali again, and told him that if he strikes again with his right hand we will stop the fight. In second round Maskaev began aggressively and Vitali countered him with another right. That’s when I signaled Michaely Jakovlevichy to immediately throw in the towel. Even to this day I remember how angry was Vitali at me.
What happened after – Vitali became kickboxing world champion in Paris. And whenever I hear Oleg’s words that in the first round he knocked down Vitali thee times, I just start to smile.”Comment
