CRITICS of a controversial decision to dispense with headguards in amateur boxing were given more ammunition yesterday when Pakistan’s Muhammad Waseem claimed an Asian Games medal just seconds into his quarter-final.

Flyweight Muhammad and Azat Usenaliev accidentally clashed heads moments after the starting bell with the Krygyzstan boxer suffering a nasty gash above his eye.

No headgear in amateur boxing is lunacy. Who honestly thought it was a good idea?

Stopping a fight just seconds into a fight because of a cut is ****ing lunacy.

Why is it lunacy? Headgear was only brought into amateur boxing in, what, the 80s? If anything, there's more precedent for not wearing it

This wasn't thought out very well. All they had to do was use the 10 point must system. The head gear and the gloves should have stayed.

              The arguments against headgear:

The headgear creates a bigger and more hittable target

Headgear may create a false sense of security for the fighter wearing it e.g. "I'm wearing headgear, I can tek more punches"

Headgear creates a "lever" because it protrudes outwardly from the face. Arguably punches are doing more damage because it's easier for the glove to come into contact with the "lever" and it twists the head more awkwardly

Honestly after being clocked with such a good shot, face still numb after 10 days, I'd rather if we use full faced headgear (face-savers)

Plain and simple the AIBA just need to bring back the headgear, taking it away was irresponsible.
