The fight was agreed and just 2 weeks away.

All i get from that article is that Maidana's team especially Contursi did a really sensible job, did what was best for their client. Also said that no contract was signed.

So Maidana ducked Thurman. And this was at a time when Chino lost his fight to Alexander. And Team Thurman offered the fight to the loser and not Alexander. Even now they're (Thurman people) not making any huge effort to make the Alexander fight. You have to be an idiot not to wonder why.

the fight wasn't agreed, read the article, not just the title. contursi said nothing official came from their side, and they chose from 3 names an opponent who turned the fight down.
