Comments Thread For: Grigory "Thrush" Drozd - The Fight of His Life

By Alexey Sukachev - Drozd means “Thrush” in English. Wlodarczyk is just as popular of a surname in Polish as say “Hernandez” is in Spanish. All in all, it’s a perennial contender Greg Thrush versus an established hard-nosed champion Cruz Hernandez (Krzyz is “Cruz” in Spanish or “Cross” in English).

But Greg’s true name is Grigory, and he represents Russia in the ring; Cruz Hernandez is the WBC champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk of Poland - and the fight won’t be anywhere near Vegas or Los Angeles, but in the windy Russian capital. To say cruiserweights aren’t very popular in the States is a huge understatement. In the top ten of the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board’s 200-pound ratings - there are no Americans. The best fighter (#6) from the New World being Thabiso Mchunu of South Africa.

In Europe, there are no weight classes bigger and more thoroughly dominated than the cruiserweight division. Moreover, it’s the only weight, where all four major straps belong to European or Europe-based (like Yoan Pablo Hernandez) fighters. The bout between one of its finest champions (in any division) and one of the most developed contenders in boxing will undeniably be one of the most notable performances on the continental fight scene this year. Im not sure who wins out of these two as I havent studied and am not too familiar with eiether, wlod has power but if he just steps out of range everytime the opponent throws a jab like he did against green then he's not going to impress the judges. His power punch is his lead right hand and left hook which can be covered by jabs and straight right hands. Chakiev I wasnt too impressed by cause when I saw some of his fights he squares up after he throws punches and doesnt look a natural southpaw, his style looks rushed. As for diablo vs green, green was tired after about the sixth round and kept spitting his mouthpeice out, so was that win realy so significant?
