Canelo should've taken the Cinco de Mayo date the old fashioned way...by beating Mayweather @ 154 (no CW) in May 2015.

Ironically, that would have been yesterday (Sept 23), which is the closest Puerto Rico has to an Independence Day. Since PR isn't truly independent, there's no true celebration, other than US' Independence Day.

If you mean the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day Parade... well, keep in mind that while Cotto sells out MSG during such occasion, it's never been a big PPV draw weekend for him. Challenging (and beating) Martinez for the MW title is as big an occasion as they come, and that PPV bombed. PPV headliners versus Malignaggi (TR Independent PPV) and Judah (HBO PPV) didn't exactly blow the doors open, either... though again, all three drew big crowds at MSG.

I was referring to HBO. I don't really recall GBP saying much of anything.

No, he'll take his 300k and add it to Cotto's 300k, throw in some hype and Mexico-PR rivalry and it'll likely do up against a million, if not more.

Yeah, but people buy the fight as much as the fighter.

Mayweather-Canelo doing 2.1 million yet dropping to 850k and 350k respectively after that is substantive evidence of that.

Also, Mayweather-Golovkin okay...but we both know that's not happening.

Mayweather is not going to fight GGG and we've never received any official numbers for Mayweather vs Maidana 1 or 2 for that matter.

Like I said after the Lara fight, Canelo's stock has dropped!! Spin it how you want, but he is not a PPV star, especially demanding to fight on ppv and against people not in his weight class. Oscar knows if Canelo fights in his real weight class he gets wrecked so getting him a long term HBO deal is best for them because outside of Cotto, another PPV will have to be against someone truly threatening...

Wow some of you people are idiots.

This isn't the NFL where a team that got beat in the playoffs can come and say, 'oh we're also playing on Superbowl Sunday, across town in another stadium.'

This is boxing, Canelo went to HBO and can fight on any day he wants. There's no earning of dates.

                      Smfh @ these morons.
