As it is, he was asked not just once, but 2 times, "are you ok"? He didn't answer even once. Now here on nsb, we have quite a few fans who pretend to care about the fighters safety. Richard Steele did the best and safest thing possible for a fighter that night, and decades later, people still cry about it. How many times did you want him to ask if Meldrick was ok?
How many times should Steele have asked Taylor if he was ok? 3? 4? 5?

Majority of the fans feel taht way because of Jim Lampley shouting when the fight was stopped & how Taylor's promoter jumped in the ring immediately after Steele waived it off. None of those people had the vantage point of us TV viewers...on TV we could see clearly that Talyor didn;t reply...the referee at that point of time did the right thing...he asked him twice if he was OK..no answer...he stops the fight. As it is, he was asked not just once, but 2 times, "are you ok"? Dude there was 8-seconds left in the fight, Taylor was on his feet. All time great worst stoppage in boxing history. As it is, he was asked not just once, but 2 times, "are you ok"? I agree there was time, but referees have to work withing guidelines laid down for them...if a fighter doesn't even shake his head to respond to questions like "u ok?"...then the ref is forced to stop the fight...
Watch this...there's a few mintues on this where Kenny Bayless explains how he and all referees make sure that a fighter is safe to continue fighting.
The bottomline is...Taylor was hurt & DID NOT respond to the referee AT ALL..Comment

Go watch Mosley Mayorga. There was 5 seconds left in that fight. Mosley connected one more time and ended the fight. Chavez had ample time to land at least one more blow. The stoppage was correct, especially when a man can't answer a simple question.Comment

A lot of the fans wanted the ref to give Taylor the benefit of the doubt. However he asked Taylor if he could continue and he didn't answer.
There wasn't one second left on the clock when Taylor got up, extra time elapse when Steele asked him to go on.
Letting the fight go on would have been unfair to Chavez.Comment

No, not letting the fight go on was unfair to Taylor. We know Chavez didn't have enough time to get that W. Taylor could of took a knew and still won on points. He was that far ahead.A lot of the fans wanted the ref to give Taylor the benefit of the doubt. However he asked Taylor if he could continue and he didn't answer.

The reason the stoppage is justified is simple....too simple.
Safety first and no one can argue it without looking like someone who doesn't care for the fighters safety. By the time Chavez got from the neutral corner to Taylor the fight would have been over and Taylor would have won....but safety first.Comment

Also if you look at Steele, that was one of the fastest Standing 8s ever. It was like he was rushing and well aware of the time left. And the fastest are you okay ever, along with the second one that seemed like he didn't even finish asking.Comment

The legendary nights special from hbo for this fight was epic man. Meldrick was beating down physically. Me personally I think Steele should of gave him the extra seconds.Comment
