The 20 I offered for the list:
1. Sugar Ray Robinson
2. Ezzard Charles
3. Henry Armstrong
4. Roberto Duran
5. Muhammad Ali
6. Archie Moore
7. Sugar Ray Leonard
8. Willie Pep
9. Pernell Whitaker
10. Joe Louis
11. Roy Jones Jr.
12. Carlos Monzon
13. Bernard Hopkins
14. Manny Pacquiao
15. Julio Cesar Chavez
16. Miguel Canto
17. Eder Jofre
18. Marvin Hagler
19. Floyd Mayweather
20. Carlos Ortiz
In retrospect, I probably whiffed not including Gavilan and Williams. Lot of great fighters.
Boxingscene's very own writer and historian Cliff Rold has the most accurate list.
Great list. Green K sent.Comment

Leonard is ranked too low. I'd put him either 2nd after Robinson, or I'd put Duran 2nd and put Leonard 3rd.
Ali is always ranked too high. His resume is inferior to Leonard's (wins over Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Benitez) and some of his wins are total BS (e.g., Ken Norton.)
Floyd deserves a top 20 ranking. But above Hagler? Monzon? Marciano? NO.Comment

Those weren't the parameters exactly. We were asked to pick the top 20 eligible for or inducted in the Modern category of the Hall. That would be changed now as the lines of Modern and Old Timer are redrawn as of this year.Comment

In the October issue of Ring magazine, they asked 20 writers and historians to list their top 20 fighters since World War 2.
Points were awarded to each fighter : 20 points for 1st place placing, 19 points for 2nd place ect, ect.
Here is how the total came out. The number of 1st place votes are in brackets:
1. Ray Robinson - 396pts - (17)
2. Henry Armstrong - 339 - (1)
3. Muhammad Ali - 324 - (1)
4. Roberto Duran - 296
5. Joe Luis - 293
6. Ray Leonard - 258
7. Willie Pep - 246 - (1)
8. Archie Moore - 189
9. Julio Cesar Chavez - 171
10. Ezzard Charles - 164
11. Perenell Whitaker - 132
12. Floyd Mayweather Jr - 118
13. Marvin Hagler - 117
14. Carlos Monzon - 98
15. Eder Jofre - 86
16. Sandy Saddler - 82
17. Roy Jones Jr - 80
18. Rocky Marciano - 77
19. Bernard Hopkins - 66
20. Ike Williams - 55
its not a credible list because of the blatant omission.Comment

No problemo. Hey Cliff I have a question, if Roy Jones would have won a Cruiserweight belt before winning his Heavyweight title would you have him ranked a little higher on your list? I don't think there's ever been a fighter that won titles at 160, 168, 175, 200 and Heavyweight. That would have been monumental, it would've been great for his legacy IMO.Comment
