  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: I Have Orders, Canelo Wants May Date

There could be an interesting battle brewing for the most lucrative fight date of year. Following Saturday's victory over Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said that he planned to return on Cinco De Mayo weekend, May 2nd. Mayweather has fought on the holiday weekend three out of the last four years.

I think it's fair. Canelo is Mexican and he should fight on the May 5th weekend. Why doesn't Floyd fight on July 4th weekend??? Lol

Canelo is Mexican. You can't blame him for choosing to fight on a Mexican holiday. But the fight has to be on HBO to make it possible.

This puts things into an interesting position.

If Canelo really does stand his ground and Oscar goes for it.

Mayweather gets the priority because he is the cash cow. However, I think he might retire.

I know this is unrealistic and plain delusional, but why not feature them on the same card? A co-main event that's actually worth a damn. Let's be honest here folks, this past Saturdays card was a little bit disappointing and those who shelled out the $75.00 should be upset. I wouldn't mind paying top dollar to see both these guys on the same night versus formidable opposition. Who’s with me?

Oscar is not ****** enough to go against Mayweather. Alvarez cannot draw more than 300,000 PPVs on his own. The Alvarez/Lara fight did so poorly on PPV that Oscar decided to put Alvarez's next fight on regular cable when he was originally planning to put Alvarez on three PPV fights this year.

The only way Alvarez will be fighting on that weekend is if he is fighting some stiff on regular HBO an hour before the Mayweather fight starts.

Maybe this is a stretch but I don't see Mayweather vs (Someone not named Manny) outdoing Cotto-Canelo in May.
