What are the rules for clinching?

Because I watched the Floyd/Maidana fight again and counted the clinches for each round, here’s what I found.
In round 1 there was only one clinch
In round 2 there was 2 clinches and 2 clinches that were broken up 2 soon and Marcos not allowed to do work. From now on I’ll just put (BU2S) behind the # of clinches broken up 2 soon.
In round 3 there were 5 clinches and 1 clinch (BU2S)
In round 4 there were 4 clinches and 2 clinches (BU2S)
In round 5 there were 4 clinches and 0
In round 6 there were 5 clinches and 2 clinches (BU2S)
In round 7 there were 4 clinches and 0
In round 8 there were 6 clinches and 6 clinches (BU2S)
In round 9 there were 6 clinches and 4 clinches (BU2S)
In round 10 there were 3 clinches and 3 clinches (BU2S)
In round 11 there were 2 cinches and 4 clinches (BU2S)
In round 12 Floyd just ran like crazy and clinched 4 times there were no (BU2S)
    TOTALS
    45 Clinches
    25 (BU2S)
(70 TOTAL CLINCHES) So what do you guys think?

the problem is clinching is not illegal. excessive holding is. floyd didnt hold excessively because bayless didnt let them work out of the clench, which is allowed. he broke them up. maidana and floyd often had free arms and he still broke them up. bayless definitely ****ed up in that regards.

There's a difference between clinching and illegal holding

What mayweather was doing was illegal holding - grabbing opponent by both elbows so he can't throw

And what bayless was doing was not warning mayweather and he also broke up the fighters when a hand was free - this is clearly wrong

There weren't a high numbers of holds compared to brook vs porter but brook and porter could still work or break free, maidana couldn't especially early when I recall mayweather was illegally holding . Later on maidana did successfully prevent mayweather from illegally holding at times

It's ****...it really depends on the referee...referee styles make fights too,lol...if it was up to me, id give them around 15 seconds before breaking it every each one or not break it at all if no illegal blows thrown

"Excessive" clinching is illegal but it is difficult to get enforced because fighters are going to collide numerous times during the course of the fight. Once a fighter gets in close you are taught to tie him up so he can't sneak a fast one on you while the ref comes to break you up. (See the knockdown in Rigondeaux vs. Donaire. Rigo should have tied him up and not let him get his arms loose)

Now clinching is taught in the gym as a way to keep the fight at your distance and prevent your opponent from getting inside. It's the perfect way to neutralize a high volume fighter that likes to be at close range. If the refs allow it there is no harm in doing it.
