Comments Thread For: Errol Spence: ‘I’m Ready for a Top 15 Welterweight’

Errol Spence enters Thursday night’s eight-round welterweight clash with Noe Bolanos as the unequivocal favorite, but the unbeaten 24-year-old will hear nothing of it.

“I have to stay focused,” Spence told BoxingScene.com after Wednesday’s weigh-in in between bites of chicken alfredo. “A lot of prospects have been losing over the past year and a half, and if you take anyone for granted, it can happen to you.”

Spence (13-0, 10 KOs), a rising southpaw from DeSoto, Texas -- a stone’s throw from Dallas -- is aware that the Mexican Bolanos (24-10-1, 16 KOs) is mired in a five-bout losing streak. However, the precocious lefty has spent camp leaving nothing to chance in a fight that will take place at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and air on Fox Sports 1.

I think Spence is a little too lanky to focus on 147. At 5'10 He'd be better served keeping his bulk and fighting at 154 or catch weights around 152 where the fighters are a little slower because I noticed one thing Spence doesn't have very quick hands at 147 so If he is struggling to make 147 now he's just asking to get KTFO eventually when he steps up then he'll become just like one of those prospects he's was talking about. Kids a good fighter and does have potential but I see just as many flaws as Broner If you really watch him closely in previous fights he's had (gets caught w/ same punch, tends to over commit, leave left low while punching) but time will tell when he steps up...

Spence does seem like the goods so they could move him fast like that. I am generally for taking it slower with prospects especially a guy with real talent like Spence because improvement usually slows down when guys step up. When a guy steps up they have to focus on what is most effective if they want to win to advance their career, thus working on different stuff to round out their game becomes much less important.

Some guys need to be moved faster though and of the recent American prospects Spence would be the guy to move quickest.

You just hope his team has a good pulse of the situation because it is delicate as both too slow or too fast result in very bad outcomes for a prospect.
