Floyd knows Cotto vs Canelo would be huge on Cinco de Mayo 2015. I can definitely see Floyd trying to take that fight away from Canelo and fight Cotto on that date for the MW title.
Its a fair point but both cotto and canelo underperformed last year on ppv. Its not that the numbers were terrible-its that both had been in really huge ppv fights with Floyd and they didn't seem to get any "rub" from that.
If you are Miguel Cotto and his people-which fight do you think they prefer? I understand the Mexican v PR rivalry angle and canelo is easier to beat than Floyd. The money is significantly different.
There is no guarantee that cotto/canelo does 500k on ppv.
I guess that Floyd would give Cotto even $15 million for such a fight...
... But I don't know if Cotto doesn't ask for more than that...
I don't think its a case of Floyd taking the fight from Canelo. I think NSB has completely over exaggerated how big a canelo/cotto fight is,
I used to think it clearly is the 2nd biggest ppv fight other than manny v Floyd. Now that the numbers have come in, I just don't know.
Cotto asking for $15 mil from the Floyd fight this time around is completely reasonable. Do he and his people think they can make that with Canelo?
I respectfully disagree. Mexican fight fans will come out in force for this one. The Mexico/Puerto Rico rivalry is still strong. You put the right undercard on this one and it could flirt with a million buys. This may be more appealing to Showtime as they won't have to pay Mayweathers guarantee and can really promote the **** out of the fight. Plus with Mayweather/Cotto you would have the fact that Floyd doesn't want to deal with Top Rank or Arum, who have already said they will be involved in someway with Cotto's fights until he is done.

The things you are pointing out may be true-but the numbers from both this year showed otherwise. When you have Arum and Espinoza both ADMITTING IN THE MEDIA that the numbers were below expectations then you know they were privately extremely disappointed.
HBO and SHowtime both wouldn't even support cotto/canelo ppv's in December. I'm sure when they re calculated the projections they realized it wasn't good investments-and networks shell out less for ppv's.
I'm not saying cotto and canelo isn't a huge fight. I'm just saying if you look at what each did as a headliner on ppv this year-the NSB perception of how much this fight would sell would seem a little off.

In my opinion (and I think not only in my opinion), the Canelo-Cotto fight on Cinco de Mayo is as "big" as it would force Floyd to take the Manny fight in order to actually compete the same night...
Only the WW titles are on the line vs Maidana. Floyd can still fight Cotto in may after Maidana beats him.
... I suspect that on Friday even the Powerlock gloves would not be found suitable enough -- because of their infamous Everlast logo on them... The Mickey Mouse Grants would replace them.
I get this point. I also see floyd's numnbers dropping so yes, while the fight IMO isn't as "big" as NSB thinks, it is definitely a fight MGM/HBO could put on that would threaten floyd's use of that date.
