I agree, and I think the ref's call was correct. I have always understood it to be a fighter has to be upright at the count of 9. Ortiz's knee was on the ground at the count of 9, and then he attempted to jump up (that is, he still wasn't upright by the time the ref said 10, but was in the act of rising still). In the US, many refs would've let it go on. These US refs are the ones bending the rules, imo.

As for the brutal finish, if that's the case, I'm still more content with the stoppage. I'd rather see fighters be protected from excess damage than sacrificed via brutal finish for the sake of spectacle of a segment of so-called boxing fans.Comment

It just depends on how you count. '8, 9, 10 (waves hands)', or '8, 9, out (waves hands)'. It makes no difference in terms of the count itself.Comment

I feel like ref's think that if a fighter lets it go to 9 and tries getting up at 9, they believe the fighter truly doesn't want to continue so he tries to have a delayed get up at 9 on purpose so the ref can mercifully take him out of the fight. It gives plenty of excuse afterwards also to argue that he wanted to continue, etc. At the same time, Benjy should have let it continue because it was only rd 2 and the dude was fresh. At this point he's going to probably disappear and never be heard of again, all because of this bad call.
I don't know, it's 50/50 on the blame. I blame fighter for taking his chance waiting until 9 and half to get up, and I blame ref for not letting him continue despite it being so early.
I don't think the refs are in there psychoanalyzing the fighters. The refs are in there abiding by their own specific role, typically (including in this case).Comment

He cut it pretty close. He was up off his knee before the count of 10, so I would have gave it to him. Now that being said, he should have never waited so long to get up. If he could have got up at the count of 8, then he should have. I mean he spit his mouth piece out, so he would have gotten extra time anyway. So why take the risk?Comment
