When I first saw this fight was made, I immediately thought of The Great White Hype. It has become a reality, though I'm not going to hate like some people are. The entire point of marketing a promotion is to increase your sales and a white guy facing Manny will sell. I'm not going to be one of the people who buy it though, I'll wait until it's on HBO the next week.

If an undefeated black fighter outboxed Provodnikov he would be hyped up on these forums though and Pacquaio would be praised for taking on a dangerous slick up and comer. Being white has actually seemed to make Algieri be taken less seriously.

Usually when a white fighter becomes champion american boxing fans (mostly non-white) start to boycott the division and it moves to Europe so I don't know how wise of a marketing ploy it would be if he actually won...

So the 11 racist posters on here speak for the entire boxing community? If Algieri were to win it would be great for boxing, it truly needs more casual fans to watch. Even if they only watch to see a white guy fight, it's still new eyeballs on the screen and some will simply become fans of boxing.

I don't know man that's kind of stretch, if he beat the Russian more convincingly and had a little bit of power he would be perceived as much more of a threat regardless of his color.

IMO him being white only adds to this promotion with this guys B level skill set and lack of power.

And I don't know why everybody keeps calling this guy slick, IMO gets hit way too much to be considered slick
