Comments Thread For: Akira Yaegashi Prepares To Withstand Roman Empire

By Jake Donovan - Akira Yaegashi had a close-up view to his future when he and Román ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez shared a card together this past April in Japan. Still the reigning flyweight king chooses to run towards the sound of *******.

Gonzalez was there purely in stay-busy capacity, dispatching overmatched Juan Purisma to pick up his 5th straight knockout since moving up to flyweight last May. Roughly an hour or so later, Yaegashi was celebrating his one-year anniversary (give or take a couple of days) as flyweight king with a 9th round knockout of Odilon Zaleta.

Their placement on the show was designed to help drum up interest towards an eventual clash together, which was finally confirmed in late June. From the moment it was formally announced, the belief was that September 5 will spell an end to Akira Yaegashi’s title run, officially ushering in the era of one of the most acclaimed lower weight class fighters in Gonzalez. so exciting, could be the start of a new era, props to both guys for having this made. I think Roman will get to Yaegashi eventually but till then its going to be tough.

Ppl counting yaegashi out in this one. I understand it but I disagree. I think he has the experience and the will to win in a war. Probably the best fight happening this year with next to no fanfare. And this is supposed to be a hardcore boxing site. Smh

These dudes are going to hurt each other, but I think Gonzalez is just the better fighter, and it will show.

I know man, but tbf, attention is being grabbed by Hops v KOvalev, which is probably more intriguing, but no doubt this is a great match up, can't wait to see it happen.

I agree. This is a very significant fight between two no.1's. It deserves more coverage. The winner should enter the P4P list with a victory.

So many great fights in the lower weights this year that it's amazing fans aren't even giving the divisions any attention.

Bouts like Koki Eto Vs Ardin Diale and Katsunari Takayama Vs Francisco Rodriguez Jr were FOTY contenders.

Gonzalez Vs Yaegashi and Estrada Vs Segura could both end up being FOTY contenders

Then you've had upsets like Novoa Vs Zhong, Rodriguez Vs Sabillo, Ruenroeng Vs Ioka

Emerging stars like the Inoue's, Kosei Tanaka, Kenshiro Teraji, Stamp Kiatniwat, the CP Freshmart fighters et al

I think it's brilliant that the hardcore fans are being given a dream year whilst the casual fans want to complain about Haymon, the "lack of good fights". If ever there was a time to start following the little men it's now.
