By "before", you mean when he was like barely at legal drinking age in the U.S.? Lol. Even then at 19-21, he wasn't exactly fighting "stiffs", he was fighting pretty durable guys who were past it, but were good for him for his age.

The criticism at the time was 100% legit because he was basically given a title for fighting Hatton and then defended that title against weak opposition. He was also a pro since he was 15/16.

But as its been pointed out since Trout he's fought nothing but very good opponents. No one can say Canelo is cherry picking now especially after fighting Lara which was a high risk low reward fight. He's proven he'll fight anyone.

All those guys were actually in his division at least. Canelo fought, a Jr. WW who was losing to Ortiz before he quit. Who jumped up two division in 2 fights, yea... you can't win this.
