After Kovalev stops Bernard, I dont want to hear any "He's old" excuses.

After Hopkins beats Kovalev, will you stop claiming that Kovalev is the next greatest puncher in history who was going to destroy everyone in and near his division as you and others on this message board have claimed about several fighters over the years (Pacquaio, Matthysse, Pavlik, Golovkin, etc)?
Kovalev is simply the next in a line of fighters that comes along every four to five years who was supposed to KO Hopkins and end his career. All the others -- Felix Trinidad, Kelly Pavlik, Antonio Tarver -- are no longer fighting. Kovalev is simply the next victim of the "destroy Bernard Hopkins" hype.Comment

Those same people will now claim that Cloud was a hype job, but Kovalev is the real thing and step above Cloud. After he beats Kovalev, they will say the same thing about Stevenson.Comment

I knew Larry would duck this post. He did last time I told him as well.Comment

thats because he is 50!
he isnt supposed to be competing at this level so every time he beats a top 10 fighter he is pulling off something amazing. every single fight he wins he beats his own record for oldest fighter to successfully defend a world title, which means he is making history every fight he wins.
people jump in joy as you put it because of his age so there is no hypocrisy in pointing it out if he loses. it should be pointed out too as it is highly remarkable. kovalev deserves credit if he wins, it would be the best win of his career against one of the best fighters in the division.
that said you have to take it for what it is and its beating a version of BHop that is way past his prime. a 50 year old version..
its the only way it can be, like when RJJ moved up to HW. he had everything to gain and nothing to lose because he is the one at a disadvantage, he is trying to pull off something special. if he succeeds he did something amazing if he doesnt he wasnt really supposed to do it to begin with. its not unfair, again they are the ones attempting something unheard of in hopkins' case and very close to it in RJJs.Comment
